Tesla Met With BMW This Week Following Bold Patent Open Sourcing

Tesla and it’s fervent visionary founder, Elon Musk, made a bold move this week by open sourcing its patents in hopes of jumpstarting the electric car industry. It’s a calculated move that wagers that Tesla can make the best electric cars even while allowing other companies to use its innovative technology all while taking away a chunk of the gas-powered car market.

As part of its push to promote electric cars, Tesla also met with BMW this week to both promote electric cars and discuss how to better use Tesla’s charging stations. No other details of the talks were revealed, but a BMW spokesperson told Reuters that “Both companies are strongly committed to the success of electro-mobility and discussed how to further strengthen the development of electro-mobility on an international level.”

BMW is one of several car companies that has agreed to work with Tesla, but in tandem with the surprising news about Tesla’s patents this week, it seems that Elon Musk’s vision of an internal combustion-less automotive future is looking a bit more realistic.

There’s a long way to go obviously, but Tesla is making the right moves, and the company has in its favor the fact that it makes a lot of sense to go with electric vehicles over gas-powered ones. Car companies have long been myopic about electric vehicles, so it’s deeply refreshing to see that they’re taking a stronger interest.

I hope that this has a positive impact on getting electric cars to the masses.

It's a bold plan, and I hope to see it succeed. By opening up the patents, Musk has allowed the electric car market to jump years ahead. The obtrusive patent system is one reason we have seen marginal increases in the tech and car markets over the last 5 years. Tesla is also one of the few car companies that don't use dealerships, another important innovation in the car market.
