TSMC to Possibly Make AMD FUSION

DigiTimes reports that AMD is currently developing their next-generation FUSION processors with both standard bulk and Silicon-on-Inusulator (SOI) process technology. Although Chartered Semiconductor is working with AMD on the SOI development many expected, there are reports that TSMC could be selected to produce mainstream FUSION products using standard bulk fab processes. If this is true, you can expect lower overall pricing with a substantial amount of initial volume headed to the channel when compared with products made using the SOI process.

AMD will continue its corporation with Charted Semiconductor for processing on SOI while TSMC may get OEM orders for the processor if the bulk development goes well, reported the paper. If AMD decides to launch only SOI-based processors, however, then Charted Semiconductor will be the only company to benefit from the development, noted the paper.
