Touted as “the first phone with social skills,”
Motorola's
new CLIQ smartphone is the company’s first
Android
handset. The CLIQ is headed to
T-Mobile in
the fourth quarter, so it should be here in time for the holidays.
The CLIQ will utilize MOTOBLUR, which was also announced
today. MOTOBLUR is designed to sync contacts, posts, messages, photos, and much
more from sources such as
Facebook, MySpace, Twitter,
Gmail, work
and personal e-mail, and LastFM and automatically deliver it to the home
screen. Recognizing this is a lot of content, Motorola has organized this
information into easy-to-manage streams that are designed to help you spend
less time managing your life and more time living it. The CLIQ is the first of
what will likely be many Motorola Android handsets that utilize MOTOBLUR.
Not only does MOTOBLUR organize all conversation threads,
friend updates, stories, links, and photos, but it also keeps track of and
synchronizes all of your contact information between accounts. MOTOBLUR also
backs up your information to a secure server and provides a means by which you
can remotely wipe the device should it become lost or stolen. Finally, MOTOBLUR
provides the ability to use applications and widgets from MOTOBLUR, Android
Market, or from pre-loaded Google mobile services.
The CLIQ is a
3G and Wi-Fi capable smartphone that has a slide-out QWERTY
keyboard and a 3.1-inch HVGA touchscreen display. The handset has a 5 megapixel
auto focus camera that is capable of capturing video at 24 frames per second.
For audio playback, the CLIQ offers a 3.5mm headphone jack and a music player
with pre-loaded Amazon MP3 store application. For storage, a pre-installed 2GB
microSD memory card comes with the phone, though there’s support for up to 32GB
of removable memory if you need additional storage.
Additional features of the CLIQ include multitasking
capabilities and one-touch access to Google mobile services such as Google
Search by voice, Google Maps with Street View,
YouTube,
and Picasa. Support for various email accounts is supported by Exchange Server,
Gmail, Yahoo!, Windows Live Hotmail, and many other POP3 and IMAP services. The
CLIQ also provides instant messaging support for Google Talk, AOL, Yahoo!
Messenger, and Windows Live Messenger.
The CLIQ will come in two color options—Titanium and Winter
White. Pricing information will be available closer to launch.
