Sony's PlayStation 3 Gets A 250GB Model For $50 Premium

Sony's PlayStation 3 "Slim" has only been on sale for a few months now, and while Sony has stated that sales are way, way up, we still didn't expect a 'round 2' to be available this soon. For those not content with the single "Slim" offering on the shelf (a 120GB model for $299), Sony will soon deliver a higher capacity model to US consumers for a $50 premium.

The 250GB PS3 "Slim" will feature a Blu-ray Drive, the new slim enclosure and a hard drive that's over twice as big as the 120GB model that launched originally--plenty of space to shove your media and downloaded games. Other than the new hard drive, everything else about the console will remain identical, well, except for the actual box. That's a bit unfortunate, as some international markets are seeing game bundles with their 250GB editions, though we suspect Sony may look into bundles here in America once the holiday rush is over. No need to give people more motivation than they really need, right?

I don't own a PS3, or any other console, what can you use all that space for?

You can buy/download movies and games.

Not that you end up actually "owning" anything... but that's the point.

Downloading movies and ogames?

I don't understand why anyone would want to use their PS3 to download movies (much better options out there), but I can understand the point of downloading game content, especially if its PS2 games.

Hehe... you're preaching the choir. I don't buy any content that I can't rip and transfer from one device to the next generation.

I'm not sure why people would buy this based on the hard drive size anyway:  You can buy a larger HD for the same $50 and replace the one that comes in your PS3 easily.  Sony actually deserves kudos for making this an expected and painless operation.

However, without the Linux and backwards compatibility of my older model:  Do not want.  :(

Unlike MickeySoft who continue to push their overpriced proprietary crap at us.

250GB laptop hard drives retail for $55 cheapest at Newegg.  Bestbuy's cheapest option is $65, so for most consumers who buy in stores it's still a good deal.

Microsoft is evil and charges an insane amount of money on their HDDs.  Yet another reason to consider the Sony camp.  Although if you're buying a 360 now, they match up comparably - and perhaps in the 360's favour.  It's $400 for the 250GB 360, but it comes with a second controller and Modern Warfare 2, making it a much better value.

But hey, you could always go to a 500GB or bigger HDD on the PS3 even after buying the top of the line model.  No can do with the 360 as you'd have to wait for MS to make a bigger size (unlikely).
