In preparation for the next generation console wars that's getting ready to kick off, Sony
went and created a new division within itself called Third Party Production. This new group will work closely with Sony's publishing partners to bring their IPs to PlayStation platforms, Sony announced in a blog post.
"I’m really excited for our team to explore new opportunities on behalf of PlayStation," said Gio Corsi, Director of Third Party Production for Sony. "Even though we’re brand new to PlayStation, we’ve got years of experience in this industry already under our belt. We already have a project underway, the recently announced PS Vita version of Borderlands 2. We are extremely excited to work with Iron Galaxy Studios on this project and I cannot wait to show and tell you more down the road."
What this ultimately means for consumers is more games on PlayStation devices. For developers and Sony's publishing partners, they gain a dedicated division at Sony as a resource to help with the development process, "ensuring quality and consistency on all Third Party projects."
The new comes hot on the heels of an announcement that Sony has struck a deal with 21 publishers to produce exclusive content for the PlayStation 4
, including Activision Blizzard (Diablo 3), Bethesda Games (The Elder Scrolls Online exclusive PlayStation 4 beta), EA, Sega, Square Enix, and more.
