Sony Considering Buying Ericsson Out Of SE Project?

Is Sony considering removing the "Ericsson" from Sony Ericsson? Perhaps. These rumors have been around in some form or fashion for years now, but they're seeming to become more and more intense as time passes. Years back, SE axed many employees as the iPhone and other Android smartphone manufacturers began eating their lunch (to put it nicely). Now, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Sony is "itching" to buy out Ericsson's stake in the SE project. Sony definitely has the means to make it work. The company's PlayStation Phone was a real gem, and while it obviously only served a small niche, it was still well-built and well-executed.

Could Sony handle the smartphone market as it stands today? Is Ericsson really the problem? Would Sony actually be better off going at it alone? It's extremely hard to judge; the smartphone universe has shifted dramatically in recent years, and it seems to be shifting even more every single day. If Sony removes the "E" from the existing 50-50 venture, it's not too hard to envision what Sony may try to do: add even more PlayStation flair to their future smartphones. Microsoft has definitely gone to great lengths to integrate sections of Xbox LIVE into Windows Phone 7, and we suspect that Sony may have a similar plan.

Would you be more or less interested in a Sony-branded phone if the "E" were dropped?

Well I don't know. Sony Ericsson made some good phones with good hardware in them but the problem mainly lies in the interface. I mean Android and iPhone has proved that you don't need a complex phone interface in order to have a phone, you just need a simple, touch-based interface. Most of Sony Ericsson's phones don't have that type of interface/buying points therefore no one feels any recent need to buy their products.

And even is Sony buys out Erricsons share, they might be a bit better with their phones but I doubt they'll sell any more phones then they did before. Besides, Sony has a questionable reputation among customers.

I actually like the Ericsson name branding. Sony Ericsson just has a good kick to it. Personally, I wouldnt want to buy a Sony Phone. Yes yes, I know, Coolice, how could you succumb to such low levels when only the branding of the phone matters. But lets face it, product branding plays a vital role in most products.

hmm i dont know if i would be sad i like the ring that ericsson adds. Iv'e owned 3 so far my Xepria play just replaced my iphone, so i think it won't matter as long as the quality doesn't suffer, which i don't think it would.

Had a Sony Ericsson phone years ago and it worked great. Had good reception and sold for a good price.

But these days,......if someone held up two phones for me to choose from, one being a Sony and one being an Ericsson, I wouldn't get the Sony for any reason. Ericsson may ultimately be the big winner if this comes to pass. (**~sort of like shedding a snakeskin~**) Smile
