Samsung Intros 1.5TB STORY External Hard Drive

Generally speaking, we look to companies such as LaCie when scouting a fashion-friendly external hard drive. Evidently Samsung's tired of being left out of the mix, as it has today introduced a 1.5TB solution that has quite a bit of style. The STORY Station is a desktop storage solution "designed to meet the explosive demand for external, secure and eco-friendly desktop PC storage."

The 3.5" external hard drive comes wrapped in a solid aluminum casing and features a trifecta of new safety features to guard against data loss: Samsung Auto Backup, SecretZone and SafetyKey. Samsung Auto Backup backs up data in real time or through a prearranged schedule, while the backed-up data can also be securely saved by setting a password with Samsung’s SafetyKey. In order to protect confidential files and folders, Samsung’s SecretZone creates a virtual drive which provides encryption for data security.

In case you didn't notice, the drive itself is modeled after the S1 Mini and S2 Portable external HDDs, and it is available in 500GB and 1TB editions as well for those who need a bit less room. It's expected to ship in May to Europe, while the rest of the world should get it shortly thereafter.

Samsung Launches 1.5-Terabyte External Hard Drive Samsung STORY™ Station for Desktop PC Storage

Seoul, Korea—April 29, 2009: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, today announced its new 1.5-Terabyte (TB) external hard drive, Samsung STORY™ Station, which is designed to meet the explosive demand for external, secure and eco-friendly desktop PC storage. The 3.5-inch external hard drive, which features enhanced security software and a solid aluminum casing, is ideal for data backup of personal, hard-to-replace data, music, photos and video files.

To protect against data loss and security compromises, the new Samsung STORY Station features three important safety features: Samsung Auto Backup, SecretZone™ and SafetyKey™. Samsung Auto Backup backs up data in real time or through a prearranged schedule. The backed-up data can also be securely saved by setting a password with Samsung’s SafetyKey™. And to protect confidential files and folders, Samsung’s SecretZone™ creates a virtual drive which provides encryption for data security.

Designed with environmentally-friendly materials that comply with international environmental standards such as RoHS, the new storage supports green operation with a power-saving mode that automatically goes into standby after five minutes of inactivity.

Based on the same innovative design philosophy as the Samsung S1 Mini and S2 Portable external hard drives announced last December, the Samsung STORY Station displays passionate red lines against a high-tech “brushed” aluminum surface with red cable ports. Samsung now provides a full range of external hard drives: the 1.8-inch S1 Mini and the 2.5-inch S2 Portable for portable use, and the 3.5-inch Samsung STORY Station for large volume data back up.

The Samsung STORY Station’s heat dissipating design – the ventilation and the aluminum cover – prevents heat build up and keeps the drive inside cool.

Available in 500GB, 1TB and 1.5TB densities, the Samsung STORY Station has a USB 2.0 interface and provides a three-year warranty.

The Samsung STORY Station is scheduled for release in May with initial shipments to Europe, and then released in other regions of the world subsequently.

I'll tell you I have been looking for a solid exterior hard drive. There are a few out there. However, in almost all options you give up something. The option I want has all options. I want a solid body, a very solid cooling solution, all external (USB2.0 or maybe 3.0 depending on how fast it hits market, and ext SATA). I also want internal options I want at least ata66 or the older standard hard drive hookup so I can do something with all my old hard drives, and I want SATA 2.0, or 3.0 internal (which are also backwards compatible with sata 1), for the same reason. Then I could do something with at least the decent sized old hard drives I have. To tell you the truth I have at least enough for a RAID 5 hook up, and probably more. I know these aren't that kind of solution. I am just saying I know I have that many of the same size to do a full on raid 5, probably raid 10. They would be great for an external data house once I can back them all up and format them.

Either way this one fits my single 2 TB single standing backup/external parameters to a T. So I am glad someone is upping the game on them. If it is someone like Samsung I can almost guarantee you I will buy at least 1, although I would like them driveless personally.
