Rumor: NVIDIA 9800 & GX2 Shipping Info

As with all rumors please take the following with a grain of salt until we receive official confirmation or denial from NVIDIA.

If the 9600 launch impressed you, but you were holding out for a card with a little more horsepower, then you might be in luck.  Rumor has it that NVIDIA will be launching high-end cards in the near future:

“At the top-end of the 9-series cards will sit the dual-GPU GeForce 9800 GX2 which will launch on March 11 this year. This will be followed by the GeForce 9800 GTX and 9800 GT between the end of March and beginning of April.”

There's no word on what to expect from these cards in terms of specific features other than the fact that the GX2 will probably be a dual GPU board, and these things are likely to be very fast.  We also can't help but wonder if we'll see AMD/ATI launch a 3880/3890 is a response.

Since I always run Intel chipsets it would be nice to see Ati release a single gpu solution that will at least match my ultra. In that case I would get 2 for a killer xfire setup... hopefully the new 800w psu I got would handle that. It's got 80 amps on the 12v rails and 4 pcie connectors(2 x 6pin & 2 x 6+2pin).

That psu should be more then enough. But one thing I have to admit I like about the fact that Nvidia is making a 9800 GX2..Is the ability to get SLI like performance for intel chipset users =P. Not everyone likes those hot nvidia chipsets >_<. In terms of ATI...Don't expect r700 to be way over the top. Rumor has it, 50% increase of 3870 in performance. Still good, but once again it's a rumor, we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, you should have no problem with that PSU.

Well..Rumor is price is around 599.99 for the GX2..Not surprised really as it's said to replace the ultra...lol. Talk about expensive...If these specs are accurate, I'm a bit dissapointed in the 9800 GTX.

http://www.tweaktown.com/news/9032/index.html.

They didn't even give it the full 384 bit memory interface that the 8800 GTX had! >_<...Hopefully it should have the 24 ROP's that the GTX has...otherwise this is pretty much an identical 8800 GTS g92 with a BARELY faster clock. But more than likely it'll have all 24 ROP's....otherwise I'm going to be even more pissed at nvidia! Super Angry

Sounds like just 2 8800GTs to me. How many times ar ethey going ot re-hash that chip?

I expected the 8800 GT and GTs g92 to be the last update, but then we got the 9600 Gt...and now the 9800 GTX and GX2. The 9800 GX2 is indeed two GTS g92's....Obviously they wouldn't take two 9800 GTX G92's...Nooo wayyyyy...They still want people to have the option of buying two 9800 GTX's for a superior SLI...Greedy buggers. Bring the g100 already! It's been 15 months already, and they are planning for a 18-24 months release for g100...WTH..It's normally 12-18...what bastages. >_<

Is the 9800 pretty much an OCed GTS? I bet they have the 1K series already to manufacture but I think they wait for ATI to come with something and they through us a little crumb to remind everyone who the badass is on the playground.

Isn't the GX just an OCed GTS. That's what it sounds like to me. Also, the 8800GTX out performs it I believe

The 9800 GTX is a g92 based gpu. But I'm not sure if it will have the 24 rops of the 8800 GTX. If it does, then it's not a typical g92, afterall...the 8800 GT and 8800 GTS both have different amounts of shader processors.

ATM...This is what we know, the 8800 GTS g92 has 112 shader processors....The 8800 GTX has 128, the 9800 GTX will also have 128. The 9800 GTX has a 256 bit interface while the 8800 GTX has 384. Word is the 9800 GTX will have more texture units, but no body knows yet. Also, the 8800 GTX has 24 raster operators...No one knows what the 9800 GTX will have...but atm people are saying 16..which matches a G92 GTS.

ATM..compared side by side based on the rumors and specs we know...the 9800 GTX is just a oc'ed 8800 GTS g92...But word on the raster operators are unknown, and it seems the 9800 GTX has a higher memory clock.

Overall..If all these specs are right..this is total BS. I was expect a 9800 GTX that would atleast match a 8800 GTX in ever aspect, with some being higher. But we might not get that..and considering how greedy nvidia is...I'm not surprised.

I totally agree

I'm leaning more & more towards getting 2 3870X2s... can't wait til the drivers are out so I can see the performance #s!!!

0

Don't think you'll be hurting there.

0
+ -

I've never run a dual card setup before, but the prospect of 4 gpus working together is pretty shweet lol!

Hi All

Like you, I only run Intel chipsets & am seriously considering 2 3870X2s in a Crossfire X configuration. If AMD/ATI can get the Drivers to Scale properly, we should see some great performance.

So is there going to be boards that will x-fire will Intel cpus?

I think you mean SLI?...Only Skulltrailm, unless Intel can force Nvidia to open their platform...Which might be a possibility since rumors state intel isn't giving Nvidia the CSI license (Nehalem based license, no license, no nehalem chipset).  But x-fire is ATI..You can crossfire on any intel chipset...It's a open platform.

0
+ -

Maybe he didn't realize that Intel chipsets support xfire.

0
+ -

Yea my bad.

0

You should look into the new crossfire configurations coming out soon, pairing an X2 solution with a single GPU is pretty innovative, and I think it is a sign of some great technology to come.

0
+ -

Damn..I want to see those crossfirex drivers bad!...I really want to see how their quad gpu solutions scale >_<.

0
+ -

Yea hopefuly AMD can kick it in the butt and start competing with Intel soon. Competition is good for all of us.

I for one will be keeping my eye on this when the 9800 GX2's are released.  I want to see what other peoples reactions are to this as this is a card I am interested in getting for myself. I will wait for the intial reviews and first users reactions first though.  As I remember the days of the 7950 GX2 and the fiasco with drivers and support from that.  This time should prove more positive and interesting though.

GX2 looks nice. But I am looking forward to the next gen single chip solution.

0

The 9800 GX2 is suppose to come out on March 11th and it is suppose to be at around $500-$650 range. Too expensive in my opinion but still cheeper than getting 2 GTS'

FlyinBrian: Same man, G100 has been delayed for too long. If we had r600 earlier and it was a performer, we would of had G100 by now =(...Although it would of been named g90 >_<..Damn you nvidia refreshes!..stop being greedy! =(...

Peti: It'll be priced at about 599.99. It will replace the ultra as the top graphics card in the nvidia line up. Nvidia actually didn't like the idea of dual GPU based cards. Probably because they make less profit then they could forcing people to pick up a nvidia based chipset and two card. I'm glad personally...I'm really despise nvidia's market positions. Their intel chipsets have issues, and yet they still re-release a refresh of it with just some new updated support. They've gotten so greedy lately =(.....If ATI had partners that offered warranties and programs life XFX and EVGA, I'd be picking up an ATI card almost every time.
