PS3 Digital Video Distribution Nearing Reality?

PS3 Digital Video Distribution Nearing Reality?

It has been a while since we’ve had anything to report on the Sony/Digital Video Distribution front, but it looks like it’s almost a reality.

According to sources the long-awaited feature is nearly available.  For their part Sony is, of course, keeping quiet.  This could be due to negotiations or the fact that the service may not be quite ready from a technical and/or infrastructure standpoint.

"We don't have anything new to announce at this time," Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold said in an e-mail.

But a Sony marketing executive said in a blog post last week that news could come soon.

"Ultimately the goal of the PlayStation Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want. More on this very soon ...," Sony's Peter Dille wrote on its PlayStation blog.

We’re not sure how soon ‘very soon’ is, but we’ll keep you informed when we hear more.

Ah, trying to compete with XBL on the 360?  The PSN is currently free, which is very awesome.  If they charge less than MS does for videos, then even more points to Sony.

Btw, that picture of the PS3 is the old version they showed back in 2005 with the crazy boomerang controller!  You can see why they scrapped that controller, yowza!
