Now THAT Is One Expensive Laptop

In what many are calling an object lesson to computer repair shops that lose customer's PCs, Raelyn Campbell has filed a $54 million dollar law suit over the loss of her $2100 laptop at Best Buy.

On the surface $54 million seems like a lot, but consider what this customer was put through.  First she paid the $300 fee for the extended warranty, then she drops off the laptop to be repaired.  For three months she frequently returned to the store checking on the status of her machine until she was eventually told that her computer was simply missing along with whatever personal data she had on it.  It's certainly easy to see how she'd be upset, but Best Buy obviously thinks that $54 million is a bit too much compensation.

“Best Buy has told Campbell that her demands are unreasonable, and has tried to settle for far less. But Campbell said she didn’t start out making astronomical demands. Months of stalling and brush-offs by the company led her to the drastic measures, she said.

Best Buy spokeswoman Nissa French said the company couldn’t comment on Campbell’s story, citing the ongoing litigation.”

She can feasibly motivate her case by trying to add a price tag to her lost data (client contacts, work, potential claims made by her clients against her) and loss of income and missed opportunities while the laptop was MIA.

However 54 mil is a lot of missing data ;)

Best Buy for years has said all this crap about customer first and we want our customers to be happy and blah blah blah, but behind close doors its always about the bottom dollar - I dont care what they tell you. Hopefully a move like this on behalf of the patrons will make the company open its eyes to its hypocritical nature....

Anyone that drops their comptuer off at a best buy is in for at least a 3 month wait, if not longer, and yeah stuff gets lost during that time cause things just sit around. Maybe bestbuy will finally get their act together and actually fix things in a timely fashion now that they might have to pay that 54ml. I seriously doubt she will get that 54mil though, cause she does have to sign a piece of paper that allow them to do things to the laptop, and if it is written by Best Buy im sure there is some loophole for loosing equipment.

I bet next time the lady will take her computer to an actual computer shop that knows how to fix computers and will be able to get it back to her without loosing it and keep her updated on what has been done to it, and an ETA on the completion of the fix.

Hi All,

Seems to me that this is another example of a Frivilous Lawsuit. Should this Woman be compensated for Her Laptop & the information stored on it? Yes. 54 Million dollar  compensation? No.

The dollar amount may be unrealistic, but this is not a frivolous suit. Besy Buy must be held accountable, the customer must be fairly compensated, and statutes must be set in order for other retail outlets to fully understand what their liability is in a situation like this one.

Hi All,

I agree that Best Buy should be held accountable for their actions. I only meant that the amount of the Lawsuit was frivolous.

nothing new really, i think i remember an article (perhaps listed here) about a hard drive, where best buy "Geek"squad, said they drilled holes in the hard drive after formatting it several times.

the customer was contacted through personal information found on the drive by a man in massachusetts 6 months later.

do yourself a favor, defenestrate your broken computers instead of trying best buy

I can only speak on the Best Buy near my house, but I've talked to a couple of their geek squad team as well as a couple employees and came to the conclusion that I know more about PCs than any of them. Not to put myself down, but that's not really saying much because I only consider my knowledge somewhere between novice and intermediate.

Whelp...I work for the geek squad and I can tell ya that the lady was offered a very fair settlement -- I can't say how much/what she was offered however I think $54 mil is more than what she needs.....

BBY is a multi-billion dollar company that I am sure can afford lawyers that'll eventually take charge of the case. This lady will probably lose but will be granted the funds for a new laptop a few thousand for her trouble or something like that....

Just my guess

P.S. Just to clarify, 99% of the time repairs take longer than expected are due to the fact that we (or our service centers rather) have to order parts from the manufacturers for many repairs (who often drag their feet in the shipping process of said parts). Not to mention that if you live in CA, your computer goes to minneapolis or chicago and has to be shipped back again which may take a day or two.... :)

Oh, and Drago -- YES, there is a stipulation on the service order agreement that states if the customer wants repairs, he/she is responsible for backing up any and all important information before the unit is checked in for repair, as any loss of data (usually due to HDD failure) is not BBY responsibility

She will never recover anything like the millions that she is asking. However, when you file a law suit you are generally limited to the amount of damages that you ask for. So it is common practice for attorney's to ask for more than you think is reasonable. For example say you file a complaint that only asks for $50,000. Then go to jury trial. If the jury comes back with a million dollar award, you are limited to the $50,000 you asked for. As a result the attorney is now subject to a malpractice law suit for asking too little. That is why attorney's ask for more than they think they can win.

They should not have to pay that much.   It will be up to a jury to dicide.  American jurys are pretty fair about these sort of things.  I espect a award of far less.
