Notion Ink Tablet To Feature Pixel Qi Screen And Tegra Chipset
We've heard a lot about NVIDIA's Ion technology here lately, but we
haven't heard much of Tegra since Microsoft's Zune HD launched. If
you'll recall, that was the latest mainstream device to launch with
Tegra technology within, but it sounds like Tegra might get another
shot in the arm via a completely unexpected device. Notion Ink, a
company that has essentially received no play up until now, has been
pegged as having a tablet on tap for CES 2010.
Is case you couldn't see it coming, we're guessing that 2010 will be the year of the tablet. Apple is rumored to have one on deck, the JooJoo is already up for pre-order and we've heard that numerous other companies are at least considering the option to jump into the sector. Tablet PCs as a whole had a small run a few years back, but they largely faded as netbooks swooped in to steal the spotlight. Now, however, there's renewed demand for Web-surfing devices, particularly ones that are inexpensive (or close to it).
As the story goes, we're hearing that the tablet (or "smartpad") will be based on Google's Android operating system, and while it doesn't yet have a final name, it will be outfitted with a Tegra T20 chipset that can supports 1080p video content. What's wilder is that this could very well be the first commercial device to use Pixel Qi's transflective display, which is a hybrid display that has the battery-saving functionality of e-ink and the color/fast action display abilities of an LCD. The 10.1" screen will boast a resolution of 1024x600, the whole device will weigh just 1.7lbs. and it will include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, WWAN support, a 3.5mm headphone jack, an SSD (16GB or 32GB) and an SD slot as well.
We expect the full specifications to be revealed in just a few weeks, but we're hearing that it will support up to 8 hours of video playback or 16 hours of Internet surfing. Pricing, unfortunately, remains a vital unknown point here, and we have all ideas that it will be the make-or-break aspect. How much would you pay for a device like this?
