NVIDIA To Simplify Product Range

NVIDIA’s VP of Content Business Development, Roy Taylor, recently commented on plans to simplify the company’s product range.

"It is a challenge that we're looking at right now. There is a need to simplify it for consumers, there's no question," Taylor explained.

"We think that the people who understand and know GeForce today, they're okay with it - they understand it.  But if we're going to widen our appeal, there's no doubt that we have to solve that problem," he added.

Will AMD follow suit and simplify their product offerings?   Only time will tell.

Will AMD following suit?  You got it backwards.  AMD already did this.  This is Nvidia reacting to AMD's logical naming.  If you asked a Joe who knows nothing about computers which card does he think is faster, a 3850 or a 3870 he'd probably guess the latter.  I'm not sure what instinct would tell you a 8800GT is faster than a GS but slower than a GTS.

The only problem is that it's only relevant within the same generation.  Certainly a Radeon 1800 beats a Radeon 3650, but with such a lower number it is troubling.  This wasn't a problem until the "GeForce 4 MX" line iirc.  Then ATi jumped on board by releasing the Radeon 9000 which was slower than the 8500.

ATi has the best naming for now, but it can still be improved upon.

yea name of these cards can be really confusing to people just trying to upgrade with no exp.

It is funny how companies aren't more careful and logical (and long-range thinking for that matter) on their products.

There are actually nvidia and ati cards for the same numbers now... want a 9600 anyone? Oh wait, which brand??? :P

Why not use something like the first number to indicate low, mid, high-end and then the following numbers to indicate the generation/GPU or something like that? So... a GeForce 1088 would be something like an entry level 8800 series of today, and a 2088 would be higher entry level and then 3088 would be low, mid-range, etc. Then the next launches could be 1089, 2089, 3089, etc. Hmmmm....

Just remember...when nvidia uses that idea, you heard it hear first from one of the HH editors. :)
