Motorola's Razr i, First Intel Medfield Smartphone Launched
Not feeling the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S III? That's okay, there are no shortage of smartphones to choose from, and one of the latest happens to be from Motorola. Remember Motorola Mobility? The company hasn't garnered as many headlines recently as its two previously mentioned competitors, but lest anyone forget Motorola's still a major player, the Google owned outfit just unveiled the Razr i with Intel hardware inside. In fact, it's the first Intel Medfield smartphone on the planet.
We covered Medfield in some detail earlier in the year and have been anxious to see shipping products built around Intel's platform ever since. Motorola's Razr i is the first such device, and it represents Intel's architecture with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display with edge-to-edge glass (virtually no border, Motorola says) and speeds up to a whopping 2GHz via the spunky Atom chip inside.
"Together with Intel, we’re redefining what people can expect from a mobile device. A camera that launches in an instant, Web pages that load blazingly fast and a device that’s the perfect balance of screen size and fit in hand," said Jim Wicks, senior vice president, Consumer Experience Design, Motorola Mobility. "Razr i delivers just that when you put an Intel-fast processor in a beautifully designed phone and add in extra long battery life."
Despite the blazing fast processor that supposedly up to 40 percent more powerful than what the competition is touting, Motorola says you can expect long lasting battery life, though exactly how long hasn't been revealed. Other snazzy features include an 8MP rear-facing camera that loads in under a second (perfect for spur-of-the-moment shots), NFC support, and of course Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
In form and function, the Razr i is very similar to the Razr M, but with a different processor and, sadly, no 4G LTE support (the Razr i is limited to 3G). Otherwise, it boasts a diamond cut aircraft-grade aluminum frame, splash resistant coating, and the now familiar Razr shape and style.
Motorola says the Razr i will be available in black beginning in October in select European and Latin American markets, including the U.K., France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. No word on when or if the Razr i will make a trip to the U.S.
