Mortal Kombat X Is Finally Official, Bone Crunching Trailer Will Make You Cringe

When the original Mortal Kombat released to arcade cabinets over two decades ago, players delighted in the violent game play while parents and politicians were shocked at the content. It may not seem like a big deal today, but at the time, it pushed the envelope in terms of what was acceptable in video games. Fast forward to today and the tenth installment of the popular franchise is just around the bend. Mortal Kombat X, like every iteration before it, will feature plenty of violence as opponents fight to the death.

It may not have the same cultural impact as the original, but make no mistake, if it's bone crunching martial arts you're after, Mortal Kombat X will deliver it. We know this because we watched a nearly two-minute trailer featuring brutal kicks, punches, and other delightfully violent action. And if the trailer is indicative of actual game play, you'll be able to interact with the environment during your battles -- at one point during the trailer, Sub-Zero rips off a nearby tree branch and clocks Scorpion across the skull with it.

Mortal Kombat X

The next Mortal Kombat installment has been teased, speculated, and leaked all over the web in recent weeks and months. Even Amazon's U.K. portal jumped the gun at one point and posted entries for Mortal Kombat X on the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. NetherRealm Studios hasn't yet announced which platforms the game will launch on, though series creator Ed Boon did confirm in a Twitter post that it will indeed be called Mortal Kombat X.

"Fueled by next-gen technology, Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience," reads text accompanying the game's trailer on YouTube. Have a look for yourself, just be warned that some of the scenes are fairly brutal.

The track you hear in the video above is an original one called "Can't Be Stopped" by rapper Wiz Khalifia. As for the game's release, it's scheduled to debut sometime in 2015.
