Microsoft Shutting Down Games for Windows Live PC Market Place August 22

Nearly a year ago, we caught wind of Microsoft phasing out its Points system for Windows 8 and speculated that the same could be coming for Xbox 360; we were right to assume the latter, because today Microsoft made it official.

“As part of the recent Xbox 360 system update, Microsoft Points will be retired and the Xbox.com PC Marketplace will be closed as of August 22, 2013,” reads a post on Xbox.com. “We encourage you to spend your Microsoft Points balance prior to this change.” The post also stated that although users would not be able to buy new games, they would still have access to content they’ve previously purchased by downloading it via the Games for Windows Live client.

GFWL Marketplace
Not for long

Some games will still have downloadable content and the ability to purchase items in-game, but none of the Microsoft-published GFWL titles will be available--anywhere. As part of the big changes, users who have a balance of points can trade them in for currency in an amount “equal or greater than” their value.

will this mean patches to allow certain titles that were requiring logging in to GFWL in order to play them?

Looks like GFWL will still exist, but they just aren't selling anything anymore. Patches exist to strip GFWL out of most titles anyway, because it's horrible.
