Marbel Electric Skateboard Is App Controlled And All The Cool Kids Want One On Kickstarter
We've reluctantly come to accept that we may never see a hoverboard like the ones featured in Back to the Future II. And if they do ever come out, we'll probably be too old to care by that point -- hip replacements aren't cheap or fun. While we're faced with that unfortunate reality, we're pretty intrigued by an a skateboard of a different. It's called the Marbel Board and it's supposedly the world's lightest electric skateboard.
The Marbel Board is a Kickstarter project that's already blown past its $90,000 funding goal with still 23 days remaining. According to the description, the electric skateboard weighs just 9.9 pounds, is 30mm thick at its chunkiest point, and can scurry across the pavement at up to 20 miles per hour, and that's uphill!. It has a 10 mile range before the battery runs out of juice.
"We felt there had to be a better way to handle these short trips. Our goal at Marbel was to build the lightest electric vehicle in the world but also create an amazing user experience. We have spent the last 2 years dedicated to engineering and designing our Marbel Electric Skateboard… the lightest electric skateboard in the world. With an amazing team, modern technologies, and support from our community we built the Marbel Board to be simple to use, efficient, and exhilarating to ride," the description on Kickstarter reads.
Another trick up the Marbel Skateboard's sleeve is that it connects to your iOS or Android smartphone via an app so that you can customize your riding style and control the throttle. You can select from three pre-defined ride modes, adjust the top speed, tweak the acceleration, map out your rides, and more.
Why build it? The design team envisions the Marbel Board replacing cars and bikes for short commutes and urban travel. It eliminates the concern over fuel costs and finding parking, and you won't work up a sweat like you might on a bike.
If all goes to plan, the Marbel Skateboard will begin shipping to customers in September 2014.
