You guys are the best, really, not even joking!

Man, that was fast! I like that it's different then the norm, I mean you're offering hardware; both a graphics card and a chance to win a motherboard. And it doesn't matter if you're in first place or not, you're still getting some sweet hardware.

Entered and done! (Liked MSI though, NVIDIA I seem to have liked already.)

That X79 board is hot off the presses and seriously cool, and I don't know anyone who couldn't use a 580GTX. Plus they are all from MSI, a company known for great design. What's not to love?

Thanks HotHardware and MSI!

AKwyn 3 years ago

Sweet, If everybody contributes as I think they would, then it'd be a new era at HotHardware! (The "Longest thread challenge" has posts from people in the earliest incarnation of the forums, funny how a longest thread challange can be treated as something of historical significance. Not saying it doesn't have a purpose, just that it has historical significance.)

rapid1 3 years ago

I don't know if this will be a longest thread though Taylor as this contest is only a week long. Now thats not that it could not it just does not seem to be to me at least. However as you said the longest thread challenge post has been there for quite some time with no reason for existence at least any more than that historical fact you mention really.

Anyway any piece of hardware on this giveaway would be awesome whether it be a board for a new build or that most beautiful GPU which I know I could really use as I am sure most everyone could!

So what does that MSI card bring to the table? Quite a lot! From Newegg:

The new member of MSI Lightning Series family, the N580GTX Lightning is tailor-made for extreme overclocking. MSI introduces the unique Power4 Architecture to provide the most powerful and stable power for the N580GTX Lightning, thus leading to significantly increased overclocking potential. The N580GTX Lightning is also rich in exclusive features, including the new Twin Frozr III dual-fan cooling with innovative Propeller Blade technology, Triple Overvoltage through MSI’s Afterburner software and top-quality Military Class II components. MSI N580GTX Lightning is designed to offer the ultimate in overclocking capabilities and is the superior choice for overclocking enthusiasts seeking to set new world records!

MSI Power4 Architecture for Overclocking Reliability The N580GTX Lightning inherits the impressive Power4 architecture from previous Lightning series cards along with improved components and design in four areas. Besides the 16 phase PWM design, the PWM module is twice as large as before and provides double the amount of current to the GPU. Memory has its own independent power supply using an 8-pin connector for minimum interference to greatly increase overclocking potential. The next-generation Proadlizer capacitor (*4) increases signal stability by leaps and bounds while CopperMOS, with 2x high current capacity, provides the GPU with a large and stable power supply. Combined, these features provide extreme overclocking enthusiasts with a more stable operating environment and the best performance out there.

Twin Frozr III and Propeller Blade Technology for Supreme Cooling The all new Twin Frozr III cooling design utilizes the innovative Propeller Blade technology to create 20% more airflow compared to conventional fan blades. The airflow also covers a large surface to remove heat quickly and effectively, and coupled with nickel-plated copper base, twin 9cm PWM fans, SuperPipe technology, and the form-in-one heatsink, the result is 21°C cooler and 5.5dB quieter than the reference design under full loads.

GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) Triple Overvoltage The MSI N580GTX Lightning comes with MSI's exclusive Afterburner overclocking utility, which not only adjusts GPU and memory clock but also manage the GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) voltages to maximize overclocking potential. Thanks to Triple Overvoltage, the overclocking capability of the N580GTX Lightning can be boosted 24% up when compared with the reference board.

Extreme Overclocking Functions For hardware enthusiasts, the MSI N580GTX Lightning graphic card comes with exclusive extreme overclocking features. Apart from V-Check Points and V-Switch for monitoring and adjusting the GPU/Memory/PLL(VDDCI) voltages in real time, Dual Bios and XtremeCool switches help to effectively prevent potential problems stemming from liquid nitrogen cooling. PWM Clock Tuner also helps to increase overclocking potential. All these functions come together to make the N580GTX Lightning the ultimate graphic card for extreme overclocking.

Top Quality Military Class II Components The MSI N580GTX Lightning graphic card uses top-quality Military Class II components including All Solid Cap for overclocking and full-speed operation, SFC for 10% higher efficiency, and 30% increase in maximum current, as well as Hi-c Cap with Tantalum core which boasts 8 times the lifetime of conventional solid capacitors. These high-quality components not only increase the graphic cards' overall service life but also enhance GPU stability.

LPL (Lightning Power Layer) Independent circuit design for GPU, memory and power layer decreases noise between different signals to ensure extreme power stability.

AKwyn 3 years ago

Well of course it's powerful; everything about this card that could of been known has already been learned. I mean I already know that this card can be possibly overclocked to 1GHz, that they released a 3GB version of this card and that this card is an overclockers dream.

It would be someones crown jewel to anybody who ever wins this.

*drool* The specifications for the X79A on the MSI site are staggering; 64GB of RAM maximum blows my mind and the Z68A is no slouch either. The graphics card is rated pretty highly and I can't wait to see the builds from these.

AKwyn 3 years ago

I agree, the motherboards are especially good. The fact that you get a sweet prize whether or not you win first place is especially sweet; makes this contest all the more juicer.

Your right when the graphics card is rated high but I think that the XE is rated higher, what with it's 3GB memory and it's cooler that changes from blue to white when heated. Still, the Lightning is nice and it's still hella powerful.

realneil 3 years ago
The fact that you get a sweet prize whether or not you win first place is especially sweet; makes this contest all the more juicer.
I like it when they give away premium parts. They'll get to brighten more people's day because there are more prizes to award.

64GB of RAM on one Mainboard is impressive. Buying that many 8GB RAM sticks to populate it would be terrifically expensive too. (but I'm willing to try)

What exactly constitutes a "quality" post? Does it have to be in a specific forum/article, or can it be in anything that peaks your interest?

Also, are you the guys who would send the announcement of the winners in an email, or does that come from MSI/NVIDIA? I ask because I only allowed notifications from this site, not its partners. Do I need to change that?

Thanks,

-Jed
Well... First off, welcome to HotHardware! Anyways, what constitute as quality is just a helpful, informative post in any forum/article; remember that they watch all of the discussions when the contests goes on. I personally think that a quality post is just made by just posting; don't be shy, were a hugely sized community and there is lots of room to let your opinions roam free! Don't worry about anything else, just post; but don't make it seem like your posting just to win a contest, you're trying to contribute here.

Also the winners (decided by HotHardware I think.) are usually announced on the post made after the contest winner is announced. It may not work out for your needs but if you keep checking this site and contributing then it's not going to be as much as an issue.

Hope that answers all of your questions and again, welcome to HotHardware! Now get posting!

rapid1 3 years ago

As far as it goes if a contest is lightning, well then it strikes around here on a pretty regular basis, and it seems like in general it will be happening at an even more constant ratio at least until next year :)

AKwyn 3 years ago

I am sure there are some improvements to the newer sandy bridge e chip boards but I am not sure what. Do you go with the board that supports an affordable chip Z68??? or do you go with the hottest in current tech that will support Sandy-Bridge e and then most likely Ivy bridge when it becomes available. Now that is a dilemma.

Regardless, good luck to all.

Well it's mostly easy for me... I'll take the newer motherboard and buy Ivy Bridge in the future. I mean it's just around the corner and supposedly it's going to offer more performance and less heat due to the 22MM die shrink.

Jedius 3 years ago

I recently got a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 for $117.19 (after tax) to go with my i5 2500K for $158.99 (after tax) from Micro Center. I thought this was a hell of a deal and this won't be my Super-Mega-Awesome build yet. I do think it will get me by for 3-5 ish years though and allow me to hunt for awesome deals on the next gen stuff by then.

Of course, I'm on a kind of value-oriented kick (as well as budget) right now. If money was no object, for sure the newer stuff would get the nod. I just don't think the extra performance is enough to offset the price for what I'm trying to do right now. I think for my 1900x1200 27" monitor this current gen with bargain prices should be enough to still put out good enough frame rates. My next build will be more excessive for E-Peen purposes. :)

CDeeter 3 years ago

Yeah I think you have a good point, go for the Z68, those Extreme chips are too expensive at this point to justify.

Jedius 3 years ago

Man, I would LOVE to have that card!

rapid1 3 years ago

I agree Jedius I would love to have any of these as any of them would be very usable although I would love to have the GPU and could really use it any of those motherboards I could use to build a new computer for my 5 year old as the big thing she put on her list to Santa is her own computer and monitor.

Luckily it seems I finally got a job yesterday after 1.5 years which will likely be starting (Orientation) Monday/Tuesday of next week. SO I might be able to put something together for her on that note :)

omegadraco 3 years ago

Congrats rapid1 welcome back into the employed world. Good luck with the new position I hope it works out for you. Are you looking to build just a basic system for her? she won't be playing BF3 or anything that graphic intensive will she? I was thinking it would be like what I normally do is build a new system for me and pass my older systems down to other family members who use their computers for basic web surfing mostly.

Thanks! It sure does. The mill I was working in closed back in Jan 09. Went back to school for 18 months, got my Associate degree and CompTIA certs and then started the job search. Ended up moving to western PA to look for work. Finally paid off and am now working for a major pc manufacturer as a repair tech.

"I would Get my gaming build going, got an a brand new Asus Crosshair 4 Extreme from my brother's girlfriend,( he did not want it, he's going for SB) a 875W Tough Power XT, a Asetek 570LC, and I won me a Battlefield 3 code, so I Would love to play Battlefield 3 and Skyrim in DX11 with no problems . Have not decided on the case but and I'm definitely buying the Planar 27' PX2710MW and the 1100T. So hopefully I have a chance at the card."

Aoshi 3 years ago

If I won, I would use the video card to replace my poor HD 3870 card. If i won one of the motherboards, I'd probably use it to help my dad build his next rig! He wants a new one more than me right now :P

AKwyn 3 years ago

The graphics card? I may probably use it to enhance my PC and possibly try to overclock it but I'm still cautious about the VRAM issue. In the case that I get a new PC; I'll use the PC with the 580 in it either for Folding purposes or as a new PC for my little sister.

The motherboard? Well If I win second place I'm going to choose the LGA2011 board and use the LGA2011 board in a future Ivy Bridge build with the newest graphics cards and components. The sheer power of Ivy Bridge cannot be denied and combining it with 28nm Video Cards and a high amount of RAM will give it tons of performance and sufficient future proofing for whatever comes my way in the future.

CDeeter 3 years ago

That video card would be inside my computer in less than 15 minutes! lol

If I won the motherboard though, that would be a slower build as I would need to buy everything except a case and power supply. Not that I'd let that stop me, just would take longer! :-)

Jedius 3 years ago

If I won, I'd have to change my pants first before deciding what to do with the parts.

Hey, while I'm here, can someone guide me to which forum I should post in about trying to switch around some OS (one Win7 Pro on old PC, and have new copy of Win7 Home available). I'd like to get Pro on my new build (if I don't sell it), and transfer off all the files (and especially bookmarks) to my new PC. I also have a 3 GB external HDD to play with if needed. No idea where/how to start on all this though.

Well. It's simple really.

1. Jot down a list of all the programs you want to reinstall.

2. Install Windows 7 Pro on the other HD, then insert it into your computer and copy any documents/special files from your hard drive to the new build. Alternatively you can use the external hard drive but it'd take more time and to do it efficiently you need one of 250GBs minimum and everybody knows how high hard drive prices are.

3. If you have Firefox then there are tools for you to backup your user profile; if not then it's possible you could copy all of your user profiles by going to the AppData folder/specific browser folder and then seeing if you can copy your user profile. I'm going to need what kind of browser you use in order to profligate further.

4. Reinsert the hard drive into the original computer and use that list to reinstall your apps.

5. Once your done, enjoy your new computer.

There is no specific program for copying your entire PC; I suppose you could use the Windows 7 File Transfer tool but it's somewhat complex, hell I've never managed to understand it; plus it required a data cable in order to connect these two PC's together. Manually copying files from one PC to another is the best way to go. I've done it multiple of times and everything ends out coming out okay...

Hope your transfer goes well.

Jedius 3 years ago

Skipping #1 for a sec as I'm hoping I can just drag a couple of folders or something auto instead of writing down all my programs I want to reinstall.

2. So are you saying I can have my 1 copy of Windows7 Pro on 2 PCs at the same time? If so, then this won't be too bad at all. I was under the impression that 1 copy of Windows could only be on 1 PC at a time. That's why I bought the Windows7 Home. Will I just not get updates on one of the PCs or something?

2.part2. Assuming I am able to have Windows7 Pro on both PCs at the same time...are you saying that once I put Win7 Pro on my new PC I should then remove that Drive and hook it up to my old PC that I want to copy the files/programs/bookmarks from...then drag and drop?

2.part2a. That actually brings up another question. What am I putting Win7Pro on? The SSD, the HDD, both? Am I just drag/dropping everything else onto the HDD, or what programs/types of programs do people usually put on the SSD? I know games go there...anything else...web browser maybe/somehow?

2.part3. I think I misstated my External HDD before, I meant it's 3 TB, not 3 GB. Does this change anything?

3. I'm using Firefox not sure what version...it's the beta trial though whatever version number that is. Not sure where/how to back up my user profile.

4. The list you mention in step 1?

5. The closer I get to getting up and running, the less and less I want to try to sell it, lol. Then I definitely will enjoy it. Only problem is I have no idea when Guild Wars 2 will ever come out...I suppose I could check out Skyrim while waiting.

Should I start up a new thread in the appropriate forum for this...or continue in a private message? I don't want to derail the discussion of these awesome prizes.

AKwyn 3 years ago
Skipping #1 for a sec as I'm hoping I can just drag a couple of folders or something auto instead of writing down all my programs I want to reinstall.
Well, you may not have a choice in the matter... Many programs will not function when you copy them directly; installing programs require installing registry settings, frameworks and a couple of other stuff you may not be able to do manually. There are some which will work when copied directly but I wouldn't hold my breath with it working...
Well half true... You can install it on another PC but you won't be able to use updates due to it being rendered non-genuine (as you already used up the license on your 1st install.) You're able to install it but it wouldn't be wise to do so.

What I'm talking about is installing Windows 7 Pro on the new PC, taking it out on the hard drive, setting it up in your old PC; booting up to your old Windows setup and transferring the files from here to there. It may take some work but it's safe (your new drive is the slave and the old is the master) and your files get copied regardless.
2.part2a. That actually brings up another question. What am I putting Win7Pro on? The SSD, the HDD, both? Am I just drag/dropping everything else onto the HDD, or what programs/types of programs do people usually put on the SSD? I know games go there...anything else...web browser maybe/somehow?
Well I assumed you were putting it on the new computer's HDD. You do have a choice in the matter; installing to an SSD will give it a speed boost but be aware that configuration is needed in order to make your hard drive the source of all your folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.). There are tons of guides that'll help you out with this one, you just have to go on Google and find the one that suits you best.

The HDD is going to be easier but you won't get the speed boost. For what you want to do, the SSD is best but it's up to you.
2.part3. I think I misstated my External HDD before, I meant it's 3 TB, not 3 GB. Does this change anything?
Yes, this means you can use your External HDD to transfer the files rather then doing the method I said above. Just plug in the external hard drive, copy the files you need, then plug the HDD into the other computer, transfer the files you just copied to your computer.
3. I'm using Firefox not sure what version...it's the beta trial though whatever version number that is. Not sure where/how to back up my user profile.
C:\Users\<user name here>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
4. The list you mention in step 1?
Right... Usually I use notepad to jot down a list of programs I want to reinstall. It's simple, easy and once you reinstall all of the programs on your new PC you can delete the txt file you created.

Of course if you want to sell the PC then you may not want to transfer everything to the new PC but if you enjoy it so much, go ahead and transfer everything.
5. The closer I get to getting up and running, the less and less I want to try to sell it, lol. Then I definitely will enjoy it. Only problem is I have no idea when Guild Wars 2 will ever come out...I suppose I could check out Skyrim while waiting.
Skyrim looks epic; and if you get bored of that game, there's always Team Fortress 2 and Quake Live for you to play.
Should I start up a new thread in the appropriate forum for this...or continue in a private message? I don't want to derail the discussion of these awesome prizes.
Starting a thread in the appropriate forum would be more appropriate, a list of forums appear when you first visit the Forums. And don't worry, we're happy to help you out, no matter where the place is.

Now let's get back on topic... Who here thinks MSI is awesome?

Jedius 3 years ago

Thanks man!

I do still have some more questions, but I'll start up a thread in a different forum and probably send you a message with a link if that's cool?

I think MSI is pretty awesome. It seems like a good strategy to promote their products. It can't bite into their profit margin too deeply by giving away a few of their products. The free advertising from word of mouth from most likely ecstatic winners seems like it would way more than make up for any lost profit from a giveaway promotion. If they can get more people to try their products (boards especially...I think they might have the premium GPU market cornered already, if still a bit pricey) from the generated buzz they could definitely gain some market share from their competitors. This is assuming their products are high quality and their customer service is excellent...if they aren't, they should probably target the low-price segment with good value instead...this contest leads me to believe they have great confidence in their products.

Anyway, just my random thoughts...at the very least, I think they are generating a lot of excitement with very little risk of someone badmouthing them when they are getting these prizes for free.

omegadraco 3 years ago

Please do a good forum would be the tech support forum :) Lot's of great members follow that forum and can assist further when needed.

MSI certainly has nothing to lose by offering these prizes up but its thanks to the hard work of the HotHardware folks (Dave, Marco) for working with manufacturers to get these prizes. Very excited for the potential of using MSI products as I have not had the opportunity to use them in the past.

realneil 3 years ago
This is assuming their products are high quality
Yeah, they really are high quality parts.
this contest leads me to believe they have great confidence in their products
As they should. They have been among the top tier PC component manufacturers for a very long time.

rrplay 3 years ago
This is assuming their products are high quality
***  no doubt about it   built some PC 5+ years ago with MSI  mainboards and still running great
this contest leads me to believe they have great confidence in their products
*** many users feel the same way  ! some folks have actually heard that if you put all the mainboards from MSI end to end

they would reach from here to the moon...

Note :: not sure of exactly where you live but close enough to get to moon....  heck you could walk on them all the way there .

Der Meister 3 years ago

MSI has been making great products for some time now. This would be a nice start to a LGA2011 socket for someone lucky enough to win it.

JuicyFruitSweeT 3 years ago

Yes! That's right
this prize will brighten any geek in no time lol Cool

realneil 3 years ago
what would you DO with the prizes?
I would do what I already am doing now. I'm collecting parts, bit by bit, as I can afford them, planning to build another gaming rig. I have some Hard drives put away, and I have a cooler too. I have some good memory put aside as well.

If I won the choice of mainboards, I'm not sure about what platform to go for. If I go with the newest LGA-2011 Intel technology it will be a longer process because of my fixed income and the greater expense. Sandy Bridge is a sure bet and I already know that it's a great performer.

If I were to win the graphics card, it would go into my best system 5 minutes after it got here. Smile (then I would be lost to normal communication with anyone for weeks)

No matter what the prize, it's a sure winner because it's MSI branded gear and we all know that they build some fine, quality PC components.

Good luck to all of you out there, and thanks HotHardware and MSI for the opportunity to win yet again,.........
Trivia question for the entrants on this sweepstakes here.. If YOU were a winner, what would you DO with the prizes?? :D
Hmm that's not hard at all :P

The graphics card would go right into my current rig to replace my  8800 GTX which would get passed down to another rig... it definitely would need a bit of an overclock with such a nice card.

If I won one a motherboard which I don't think you can really even call a second prize :P I would have to take the X79 motherboard and stash it away for a month or so while I build up the cash to buy a processor :)

LBowen 3 years ago

If I won the graphics card it would go straight into my NVIDIA-based rig that my girlfriend uses and I would compare the past benchmarks with the new card. If I won a new motherboard I would promptly go to Newegg to purchase a case since I already have a bunch of components towards my 1st build.

If I got the 580, it'd go in my current system immediately! If I got a choice of the motherboards, I'm not sure what I'd choose yet. I'd love the X79 board as Ivy Bridge will be awesome, plus I'd put in 32GB of RAM and make a 24GB RAM drive! -drool- But the Z68 board is much cheaper to get running right away with a nice 2500 or 2600k and 16GB of RAM. Any of these parts would put me a good step towards my next build though.

If I won the GTX 580, I'd use it to replace my current 6870, and put the AMD card in my younger brothers christmas build I'm trying to make him so that he has a gaming computer to use when I leave to college next fall

If I won the motherboard, I'd use it to replace the the error ridden Asrock motherboard I purchased that has a couple of defunt SATA Drivers that cause irreparable BSOD errors if installed, and without those drivers doesn't detect more than one hard drive for some reason or enable the 6gb/ps transfer rate listed on the product specs, and I'd put the old motherboard into the build for my younger brother too (Not to be cheap but just because he wouldn't need or use multiple hard drives and a faster data transfer rate wouldn't make a difference for what he uses the computer for)

But yeah that's pretty much it, Thanks again to MSI, Nvidia and Hothardware for the opportunity to win this great stuff!

Seems like you have one of those affected motherboards with the infamous chipset flaw. While a newer motherboard may be nice, you may want to try calling ASRock to see if they can replace it for you; seeing as it's a flaw across those boards with the flaw in them. If you did get it replaced then well, not much you can do but hope you win this baby.

Still, the motherboard is a great win no matter what type of motherboard you currently have.

realneil 3 years ago
Seems like you have one of those affected motherboards with the infamous chipset flaw
Is it one of the original P67 Chipset Motherboards? It should have already been replaced by whomever made it for free.

That GPU would be awesome. I personally have not ha an Nvidia card since I had PII 400. So winning it would be awesome!

hey that's great to hear Manduh let us in on your awesome new rig in the near future. Good luck to everyone on this contest it is over in 3 hours.

OSunday 3 years ago

@TaylorKarras:

Yeah this one definitely has some flaws but I've got it up and running, I'm just never going to buy an Asrock product again. I checked their insurance policy after you suggested an RMA it or seeing if it can be replaced but I'm already past the warranty for newegg and asrock as a manufacturer and the fee's for sending in your board etc. ranged around $80, it seems like too much of a hassle for something that might not even work again

@realneil:

Nope, its an ASRock 890FX DELUXE3 AM3, I'm pretty sure newegg doesn't even carry it anymore and hopefully Asrock stopped making it too

Heres the product: (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157196)

Still though, as much as I want to win this board or graphics card (to run some sick 3D with the TV im getting for christmas) I wish everyone goodluck!

I'd still have to buy a CPU for it since these are Intel (unless by some chance *starry eyed look* there are AMD versions of these boards too)

realneil 3 years ago

@OSunday:    That replacement deal was for certain Intel Chipset Mainboards with the original P67 Chipset on them. They had a flaw and Intel paid every manufacturer to replace the boards for the sake of dependability. It cost them a crapload of money to do it too.

Oh Wow,........I bought two of those boards and put Phenom-II CPU's in both of them. They have 8GB of GSKill RAM and Gigabyte GT240 video cards in them. Also, they both have SeaSonic PSU's in them.

Both systems went to my kids that are still in school in Southern California. They go to UC Santa Barbara.

Both systems are problem free and have been for over a year, maybe a year and a half. They use them every day.

Maybe you got a bad one, I've had nothing but good luck with ASRock boards and have bought over 20 of them in the past few years.

I have 5 ASRock boards here now. All work fine.

Thanks HOTHARDWARE and MSI!!

Just amazing how time and again you're able to give such great stuff away. Plus the most up to date in depth articles on our favorite tech.

Love our community too. Someone is always there ready to help when you have a question. No trolls, no flame wars, no spammers, just kind friendly people willing to lend a helping hand.

Best site ever!

Ditto. One of the things I really enjoy is that the HH crew gets involved in the discussion many times.

Agreed,........probably because they're just as interested in this stuff as we are, or more.

Ha-Ha!

All of them have responded with posts concerning their wins on the forums, so I can safely assume that they contacted HH to give their shipping info!
