MSI Z87 Motherboard Roundup: Rockin Haswell, A HotHardware Review

We’ve already had a taste of what ASUS and Gigabyte have to offer in the way of Z87 motherboards, and now it’s time to give MSI’s lineup a spin. MSI’s offering of Z87 motherboards has essentially three tiers: the “POWER” series (which includes four XPOWER and MPOWER boards), a trio of gaming boards, and five mainstream boards. The company sent us a motherboard from each area to put through their paces.

The Z87 chipset goes hand-in-hand with Intel’s 4th-generation Haswell processors, and we outfitted the three MSI boards--the tiny Z87I, the Z87-G45 Gamer, and the Z87 MPOWER Max overclocker--with an Intel Core i7-4770K (3.5 GHz) CPU to see how the trio performs.

I have the Z87-G45 Gaming on the shelf with a i5-4670K to go into it.

I'm looking forward to getting the build done.

That's a solid, reasonably priced board, Neil. Good luck!

I got the board on sale at Newegg. It and the CPU were not too expensive. An XSPC 750 Raystorm 360 Water cooling kit will cool the CPU.

I already have the Z87-G45 gaming w/ i5 - 4670k installed, it works perfectly without a hitch and I was able to OC it to 4k easily

Nice, Nelson. Standard air cooling?

I think so. One of the things that I liked about it, (and why I bought it) is that it has mSATA slot on the motherboard. I have a friend with a 240GB mSATA drive for sale and I'm saving to get it.

I'll have it on the board when I do my build.

I bought both of these, but haven't built the system yet. My friends tell me that the performance is great. Reliability is usually good with MSI boards.

Great guide, I really struggle to find a place where you explain these applications well, I'm afraid to change the settings because it is easy to make a mistake
