MSI Debuts GTX 275 / HD 4890-Based GPUs

If you thought NVIDIA and AMD would develop and launch new GPUs today without letting 'ole MSI know about it, think again. Much like Zotac (and countless others) have done, MSI is letting loose its newest graphics cards based on NVIDIA's fresh GTX 275 core and ATI's HD 4890.

First, we're looking at the company's N275GTX Twin Frozr, a beastly device that's centered around NVIDIA's latest. It features a dual-fan design and no fewer than five heatpipes to keep the PCB from melting while you're melting faces and breaking hearts in a undisclosed deathmatch arena. There are also 240 stream processors, 896MB of memory, a 448-bit GDDR3 memory pipe and an intelligent fan design that automatically adjusts RPMs depending on the core temperature of the GPU itself.



For the ATI fanboys, there's the R4890-T2D1G, a long-winded card that is based on ATI's newest 55nm design and coupled with 800 stream processors and 1GB of GDDR5 (124.8GB/sec) ultra-high bandwidth memory. Obviously, this one also supports CrossFireX technology for multi-GPU fun, and the integrated UVD 2.0 hardware decoding technology should please the multimedia junkies. Neither card has been priced or dated just yet, but we'd be on the lookout for them to hit retail shelves sooner rather than later.

Nice, but whats up with the nice fan on the 275 and the 4890 getting stuck with the old stock fan?

LOL, I love it when they say pricing isn't available Newegg has had both priced and avaialable since last night. Yes, they have prices to! Both of these units are nice, but I really think one or the other (ATI/NVID) will drop something even more capable in the next few months. These cards are really pointless as there performannce level above already released cards is minimal if existant at all. I mean if I got the truly best card at this current market it would be a Nvid 295 or a 4870X2. But, the price drops these new cards bring with them is what interests me.

This is true, but if your buying a card right now the 4870s put out a ton of heat. The 4890 is more than just a speed bump. I really think that it is worth the extra ~$50

I thought that the 4870 was based around 55nm already? What is the "improvement" that the 4890 touts?

The 4870s are 55nm, but the 4890s run much cooler than the 4870s. I'm not saying anyone should upgrade, but I have 2 4870s and they heat up my computer room so much that I have one of them sitting on my desk. If I put my feet behind my case(something I used to do with my 8800gts to warm my toesStick out tongue ) the air blowing from just one is to much for me after only a few seconds. I'm not saying anyone should upgrade, but I think if you are thinking about getting a 4870 that the extra cash is worth it for a overall cooler and quiter gpu.

HHs 4890 review:

While the power consumption numbers put the 4890 and 4870 in a similar league, we can say the 4890 runs much cooler than the 4870. Our Asus Radeon HD 4890 cards idled at under 50'C and peaked in the mid 80's under load. But where we noticed the biggest difference was when we removed the cards from the test system. After testing, the Radeon HD 4890 felt very warm to the touch when removing it from the test rig, but the Radeon HD 4870 was so much hotter, it was almost too hot to handle without giving it a few minutes to cool down. Not exactly a scientific data point, but something we wanted to mention nonetheless.

This is something I can attest to. The metal on the 4870s heatsinks can actually burn you.
