MS Fined $1.3B By EU

Microsoft has been ordered to pay a series of fines totaling $1.3 billion for withholding critical information from developers.  Because Microsoft controlled the operating system, the EU feels that Microsoft's attempts to charge money for access to information regarding its APIs was tantamount to abuse of their industry leading position.

“EU regulators said the company charged "unreasonable prices" until last October to software developers who wanted to make products compatible with the Windows desktop operating system.”

While Microsoft has been fighting this issue for three years now, the company did make major changes to its policies towards the end of 2007.  There is no word yet on whether or not Microsoft will attempt to appeal this decision.

I dont know what else they expect Microsoft to do. They have put a lot of resources online. They only charge .04% in liscense fees these days. It just seems EU likes big succesful companies and because there on the top of their respective markets it must mean they are being anti competative. Intel's market share has climbed this year and I know its becuse they have a superior product, yet they are in the eyes of EU union. They are on top so it must automatically mean anti competativeness.

Stupid EU. Not that MS is a holy company, but that fine is just ridiculous.

another thing that is silly is Microsoft asked them the last time strait out "What do we need to do to comply with the law" their answer was "We dont know, but we will fined you if you dont". Strange you can be fined just because they feel like doing it. They dont even know what needs to be done. I stated earlier Microsoft has done all but write code for their competition and yet this bs still keeps getting dished out by the UE union. Really makes me angry. Do you know who foots that bill ? right we do in higher software prices.

This is actually pretty old news, or could be new? I remember about a year ago the EU was charging like a Billion for some reason because of Windows Vista. I have no clue why, but it is wierd.

Yet again, the EU overstepping their power.

They do this "To encourage competition" ie, they might have a superior product, so we will level the playing field by kicking them in the nuts.

So where will this money go? Fining an American company to finance French roads?  A commity to see how we (the EU) can become more communist? Any way this goes  it is rediculous.

First Intel and several suites against them, then several against MS. The EU is looking more socialist with each passing day.

Yeh really ? why do they need a bigger fine ? I mean they did everything they EU asked. Infact They probably didnt know what to do exactly. They asked EU strait up what do we need to do to comply with the law, their response was I dont know. Take your Microsoft hate away from my HH forums. They have extensive documentation and information available online for anyone. They have done everything they can except write the code for their competitors.

Yes, this sparks a nerve in me. I am just about sick of it. I wish I could warp you nubs back in time to pre microsoft. You could see how much they have done for PC enthusiast. I would go as far to say such a thing wouldnt exist had they not existed. Nope we would be stuck with proprietary Software on Proprietary Hardware and pay 4,000 per machine.

calm down i dont hate microsoft in fact im using them right now my point was that is such a small amount of money compared to what they make

i know that because of microsoft everything is cheaper  look at apple a 1000 plus for a decent machine when you can get the same perfomance from windows in a 500 dollar machine sorry if i offended you but the point i was trying to get across was a different one than you interperted
