LG to Unveil 5-inch Bendable OLED Smartphone Display at SID

LG Display, a division of LG Electronics, is getting ready to offer up a glimpse of its future TV, mobile, and other products at the Society for Information Display's (SID) Display Week 2013 convention. Among the products LG plans to demo is a 5-inch plastic OLED panel that's flexible and nearly "unbreakable" (nothing is truly indestructible, but you're not going to break this thing simply by bending it).

Flexible OLED displays have been talked about before -- quite a bit, actually -- but this is LG's first foray into flexible 5-inch territory.

"The development comes at a crucial time when smart devices are being used more than ever and at increased risk for damage from drops, hits, and other accidents," LG Display points out in its press release.

LG's flexible OLED efforts up to this point have mainly focused on television displays, and at SID, LG will demo a curved 55-inch OLED TV alongside its 5-inch panel. It's based on the same WRGB OLED technology as its standard 55-inch set, but with a curved design that businesses and advertisers can use to wrap around columns.
