Intel's François Piednoël is no fan of the competition making claims about what his company can and can't do, so he's taken to YouTube to post a video to showcase what the company's upcoming Clover Trail+ SoC is capable of. A quote that helps lead into the video comes from ARM, which claims that "Intel will never be the leader in silicon power efficiency". That leads into Intel's teasing, "They told you it was not possible", before revealing the Lenovo IdeaPhone K900, first announced at last month's CES.
On the phone is Epic's popular Android benchmark Citadel, running smooth as butter at a cool 1080p. While there are many phones out there that can run this benchmark well, even at 1080p, I think Intel's intent here is to prove that its x86 architecture isn't lacking. It can keep up to and perhaps even surpass the leading competition.
After Citadel is allowed to run for a few moments, the app is exited (with minimal delay), and then Performance Report Texturemark is loaded up. The benchmark mode is not run, but the "Free Mode" is, and it again runs extremely fluidly. Wrapping the video up, the phone is removed from the Intel blue PR paper to reveal the text, "They were wrong."
While an interesting video, the question has to be begged of how this example of high-performance correlates with the power efficiency claims that Intel is looking to debunk. A GeForce GTX 680 on the desktop might be powerful, for example, but that doesn't mean it's as power efficient as the competition. Nonetheless, what we see here does shine Intel's upcoming Clover Trail+ in a good light, and it's our main hope that we'll soon see more Intel smartphones flood the market in the future. It's one thing to realize that a phone architecture is great; it's another to actually be able to get your hands on it.
