The battle between Microsoft and Apple may have caused Microsoft to lose some of its luster in the global brand rankings.  The Redmond giant has slipped from number 11 to number 59 over the past three years.

"The effect of Apple's 'Hi, I'm a Mac' advertising campaign may have taken its toll on Microsoft," CoreBrand CEO James Gregory said in a statement. "The launch of a series of new products, following a long, relatively dormant period, will be closely watched to see if it will have a positive impact on the Microsoft brand."

Microsoft remains a strongly recognized brand in virtually all markets, and it's very likely that other surveys wouldn't rank the company quite so low.

Now if only Mac can keep it up for another ~10ish years maybe they can actually compete with MS dollar for dollar :) I guess what I am saying is....good for Mac but they still have a TON of ground to gain

I know Microsoft isn't at their peak right now, especially with the ongoing Vista problems, but really?  A drop that drastic?  Their survey must be a fluke.  Color me skeptical on the accuracy of these results.  Apple may have risen, but that doesn't mean people don't know what Microsoft is.

I don't see many people with MAC desktops either... 1) they are overpriced, 2) compability is still an issue... mostly, the only Apple/Mac products I see are the IPod, IPhone, and Macbooks... I'm pretty sure Microsoft has a much much much larger share of the technological market :)

Actually those comercials really got me to despise Apple more than anything. They are based to scare people from misconception and half truths, the only one that had a point was perhaps the anti-virus, though this has changed alot with Vista.

 they should just sell there os if they wanted to compete with windows but i do think those rankings are a bit off

In my oppinion,the Apple advertising is much more frequent than the Microsoft one,but the OS is worse

i dont nescearily hate apple os its just different and there will always be a group of people that will like it so i think if they sold it seperatly they would be able to reach more people

 Apple is a niche market, they would not survive at all going head on against Microsoft.

 

There is a reason they and only they can sell the OS to work on their hardware.

I would have agreed with this a few years back but since the iPod soarded into the stratosphere (and took like 60%+ of the mp3 market alone)  I defiantely think they want to be a bit more than a niche company with this newfound wealth -- hence all the "breakthroughs" with macbook/airbook and generally their whole notebook line. But its just my opinion....

You both are right. I think Apple is a niche market if you are referring only to their OS and software in that it doesn't appear outside any Apple products (QuickTime being the exception). However, as a whole if you look at Apple's entire product lineup then I would say they are not. As you pointed out ice, they have an overwhelming presence in the mp3 market and their iPhone has been an enormous success. Their laptops are quite popular as well. They are gaining in popularity everyday. I think a lot of people buy Apple products to be fashionable or make a statement also, not necessarily specifically for their performance or features.

 Getting back to the article, every Apple commercial I have seen I have hated. They're right up there with the GAP and Old Navy commercials.

Apple was named in the top 10 admired company by Fortune magazine this year ahead of Google and Steve Jobs "is listed as Fortune Magazine's most powerful Businessman of 2007 out of twenty-five other top businessmen". The past year has seen the iPhone become the hottest piece of equipement, and has become the spiritual successor to the iPod. Apple are pushing  an aggressive and effective advertisement campaign. Financially they are doing really well, their stocks have taken little damage despite the current downturn of the US economy. This all significantly help the Apple brand. At this stage I wouldn't call Apple 'niche', Linux is a 'niche' market, not Apple. Apple is also slowly becoming a viable games platform.
So this is a great time for Apple, in the past I haven't liked Apple but they are getting much better.

I too am very surprised though to see this though.

 The reason I agreed that Apple OS and other software were a niche market, was for two reasons. First, as of right now they are only on Macs, which in and of itself  would be a niche, and second because in the US Mac computers only have a 5.9% market share. They may hold a higher market share in other countries, but as far as the US in concerned, I think 5.9% is still a niche. At the rate they're gaining in popularity though, I don't think it will be long before they represent a much larger portion of computers being sold. They already out sell Gateway, and Acer. Right now their notebooks are what garner most of their sales. They need to work on improving their sales figures for their desktops if they really want to compete with Dell and HP though.

They need to work on releasing some more "mid-range" products as they generally go for high-end only. If this were to happen I could almost bet they would find a lot of success there; to me though, apple by definition (at least in my mind) is "high-class, high-end only"

if a company relies only on its branding  and not on the quality of its products,then I cannot call it a good company
