Here Comes The Samsung Galaxy S5, Plus Wearable “Gear” Devices

After the blockbuster spectacle that was the release of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the hullabaloo over the next generation of Samsung’s flagship smartphone seems almost demure, but in any case the company announced the new Samsung Galaxy S5.

The phone features a 5.1-inch (1920x1080) Super AMOLED display and a quad-core 2.5GHz processor with Android 4.4.2 (KitKat), 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of storage, and a microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB of additional storage.

The front camera is a solid 2MP, but the rear 16MP camera is where it’s at. The rear camera also features 0.3-second autofocus, advanced HDR, and a special selective focus feature that creates a depth of field effect.

Samsung built the S5 to be IP67-level dust and water resistant, and it also features a fingerprint scanner for security, S Health 3.0 to track personal fitness, and an Ultra Power Saving Mode that turns the display to black-and-white and kills unnecessary features to preserve battery life.

The LTE-equipped S5 also features 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, MIMO (2x2), Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, an IR remote (that can sense your gestures), and USB 3.0. Sensors include an accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity, compass, barometer, ambient light, and a heart rate sensor to go with the S Health 3.0 capabilities.

Samsung did not announce pricing, but the company did say that the Galaxy S5 will be available in April.

In addition to the S5 announcement, Samsung is rolling out new wearables. We’ve already mentioned the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches, but there’s also a wrist-mounted device called the Samsung Gear Fit. The Gear Fit has a 1.84-inch (432x128) curved AMOLED display and features a pedometer, stopwatch, timer, heart rate monitor, and more, and the device can also handle notifications from your smartphone.

There’s a changeable strap, a gyroscope and accelerometer, and Bluetooth 4.0 LTE, and like the S5, the Gear Fit is IP67 dust and water resistant. Under normal use, Samsung says you can expect 3 or 4 days of battery life.

It’s also very much worth noting that although the Gear Fit can be used in tandem with a smartphone, you can also use it as a standalone device. Like the S5, Samsung didn’t offer any pricing information, but it will be available in April.

The back of the phone seems to resemble a 1st gen Nexus 7.
