HP's Slate 21 All-in-One Brings Android To A 21.5-Inch Desktop Convertible
There are plenty of AiOs around, and they pretty much all run Windows 8. Now, however, HP has unveiled a 21.5-inch model called the HP Slate 21 that runs Android Jelly Bean.
There aren’t too many details out yet regarding the actual hardware inside the Slate 21, but we do know that its touch display is a full HD IPS affair and that it will run on a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor with Android 4.2 and 8GB of onboard storage, and it will have DTS sound, HP TrueVision HD webcam, WiFi Direct, and Bluetooth 3.0. There’s also plenty of support for external storage with three USB 3.0 ports.
If it sounds as though the Slate 21 is on the weak end of the desktop spectrum, that’s because HP appears to be positioning it as a large tablet instead of a desktop. It’s a great idea; the device can be used with a mouse and keyboard like a typical AiO, and it can also be propped up and used as a touch device, laid almost entirely flat, or even mounted on a wall. Thus, the Slate 21 affords a family a multitude of ways to interact with it.

Because it runs Android, Google services are tightly integrated into the Slate 21’s user experience, and it supports up to 5 user profiles, which makes it even more attractive for a family. The device will cost $399--priced, you’ll note, like a large tablet--and should launch in the U.S. in September.
