If you weren't lucky enough to win
one of HP's newest MediaSmart Servers, the company's newest firmware update just might convince you to plunk down for one anyway. Announced today, the version 2.5 software for the EX485 and EX487 MediaSmart Servers
provides remote video streaming and video conversion of unprotected content. Interested in all the details? Read on.
The new update, which is being provided free of charge to EX485 and EX487 owners, enables the device to automatically convert videos (including unprotected DVDs) into two resolutions. The original, high-resolution file will stream to most devices on a home network including PCs, Macs and gaming systems, while the mobile resolution version of the video can be downloaded and played on popular mobile devices including the iPod touch, iPhone and PSP. We're told that it can transcode most popular file formats into high and mobile quality MPEG-4 (H.264) versions.
Sadly, the update won't work on the first-generation MediaSmart Servers, and we're told it's due to insufficient CPU power and RAM. For those with the new versions, though, they can look forward to remote streaming to Apple's iPod touch and iPhone. The (also free) application makes streaming photos, music and videos remarkably simple, and the interface actually looks a lot like the interface seen on the integrated iPod app. Both the iPhone/iPod touch app and the update itself should be available by the end of this month.
