How about this. If you refuse to post with Facebook, then just send and email to the Digital Storm contest box stating as such. We'll be picking a winner with them and contributions here count a lot too. That said, someone that does it all and is a good contributor will have one up on you.

Oh God no. Not another contest that requires me to join or use Facebook.....

When will the madness end?

Once again, I will be sitting this one out as well because Facebook is evil and a waste of time. Where is Jimmy Kimmel when I need him to start rallying for people to ban Facebook altogether?

Even if this includes Canadian users, I will not be selling my privacy and soul to Mark Zuckerberg for a high-end PC.

I simply do not get what the major issue is with Facebook. The ENTIRE internet is a big security hole. You simply do not put anything on your Facebook page or any page of the internet, that you do not want the world to see. Folks, we need to get over it. At the bare minimum, Facebook and other social networks put you in contact with people and companies you might not otherwise get an opportunity to meet or reconnect with. Just control your own information and what you share and there is zero issue with FB, just like any other page on the internet.
The issue (how I see it) with facebook is mostly the "bait and switch " when it comes to controlling your own information. In its initial form, the primary way your information would fall into the wrong hands, was due to your own misconfiguration of privacy settings, an actual flaw/exploit in coding, or an infected machine. Changes in user agreement, privacy policy, privacy settings, and facebook design in general in 2009 removed the ability to keep your information "locked down" as were, barring a flaw/exploit/infection. For instance, there is currently no way to completely prevent your facebook account from being found while searching on facebook. That used to be preventable. This is one example where facebook directly deceived it's users.

This is definitely enough to start taking your business elsewhere, if you actually paid anything for using facebook. But , the bigger reason to hate facebook, is that it is an enabler. It supplies a streamlined medium for your friends, family, acquaintances, and even just one time contacts from a chat room you used 12 years ago, to be less than prudent and discriminating regarding the information they share about you.

To use a more extreme example. Lets imagine "Jane" made an internet purchase for a "device of pleasure" from an independent seller over a decade ago.The seller adds Jane's email address to the contact list . time goes by, Jane's enjoys her purchase never looking back . facebook appears. The independent seller has grown into a larger operation, now offering deluxe models of Jane's original purchase, that spin, have the optional knuckle attachment and much much more.

The seller has since changed emails a few times, but each time saving their old contacts. Seller opens up facebook account, allows facebook to access their email for contacts. She still has the same email address. And by now, Jane has a facebook account too. She uses it less than casually, never really getting interested in technology that doesn't use AA's.

But she has children now. And they love their myspace's and facebooks. And they use moms computer. And facebook suggests different users of the same computer may know the same people, or bondage equipment suppliers.

Of course facebook cant be directly blamed for this. But its easier to hate facebook for making snitches out of your friends, than hating your friends themselves. And fact that information about you can be so easily accumulated, even if you don't have a facebook account, makes it all the easier to hate.

I hope this counts as the kind of contribution necessary to win that system. That would be sweet to play farmville on.

farfrmnormal 3 years ago

Facebook doesn't show ads as such mentioned above based on what a user has subscribed to via e-mail in the past.  Thet suggest ads based on the interests listed in your Facebook profile.  Honestly, I agree with Dave_HH, YOU can choose what information goes on the internet if you take some time to be cautious about what you let be visible.  Of course there are some concerns with the way facebook handles applications etc - so don't use applications.

If only people thought about the amount of personal information they throw away each day.  I am an Internet Security professional and I have taken many courses about identity theft etc and your daily garbage actually poses more of a risk to you than Facebook does.  Big brother is always watching you - if you think you haven't been affected by technology giving out your personal info just because you don't have a facebook account you're being naive.  I'm not making a personal attack at YOU personally, I mean You as in the general public.  My step father has NEVER touched a computer yet he was a victim of identity theft.

And I don't think we have the right to judge what HH or any other forum for that matter chooses to require to win something that is being given away.  If you want it bad enough, you'll make a facebook account.

Sorry if I offended anyone, not my intention - just my two cents ...

On a side note, I wish this site was viewable on my BB - I would be posting a lot more.  I'm on the road alot and my BB is sometimes all I have for my connection to the Internet.

Well put  &  totally agree with you on that one.

rapid1 3 years ago

Yes I agree with that statement entirely as well. If you do not find the contest to have an attractive enough prize, then you do not have to enter. If the requirements are more than you find it to be worth, then do not enter. If you don't want to win do not enter. That seems to be simple enough conceptually does it not. Just as a general statement you know what I really hate. People who whine as there is no way to please them no matter what is done.

Such as we will give you a $2-3000.00 PC, but the producer of this PC has stated that they want the contest to be linked into Facebook, or some other social media internet forum, and therefore it is a requirement for said contest that you must post to the required social internet media site. I understand not liking facebook, so do not enter the contest if you do not want to post to Facebook as it is required.

But no I am going to whine about it at the top of my lungs, and say it is not fair. Hmmmmm....... That actually seems pretty juvenile when looked at in that truthful spectrum does it not?
But no I am going to whine about it at the top of my lungs, and say it is not fair. Hmmmmm....... That actually seems pretty juvenile when looked at in that truthful spectrum does it not?
Holy Crap!

I didn't think that I was whining. I expressed that I wouldn't join FaceBook again and I posted a few reasons why. It's not a juvenile concept when you take the time to read about some of what others have had to deal with on FaceBook.

READ ABOUT IT A LITTLE HERE  THERE'S ONLY ABOUT 4.17 MILLION HITS TO THIS SEARCH.  (hint: they can't all be full of crap)

It's true that FaceBook can be a fantastic tool for advertisers and business owners, I get that, but some of us just don't want to play. I don't like junk mail delivered to my home, junk e-mail in my computer's Inbox, and inappropriate hidden cameras really piss me off.

Too many people don't take the time to learn how to protect themselves while online ANYWHERE and having to travel a purposely convoluted route on FB clicking through settings pages to protect yourself and turn off their 'features' is a bunch of crap.

Why don't they just put ONE BUTTON on the main page of FB that takes you to a "plain-speak" settings page with one or two, or even three levels of protection that you can enable that really do work,....completely? They could do it,.......but the advertisers would freak out on them and they're afraid to do it.

I didn't join up for this contest (as everyone seems to be suggesting) because of FaceBook, (even though Dave says it's not set in stone that you need to) but don't call me, and others that feel the same way as I do "Whining and Juvenile" rapid1.

rapid1 3 years ago

They do give an easy way to protect yourself. I am not really criticizing you or anyone specifically. What I am saying is that Digital Storm or any other organization who provides the costly hardware for a prize such as this says that these are our requirements. Hothardware in general can do nothing about those requirements as they are not there own, but are those of the provider as illustrated in my first sentence on this statement. My comments were not really aimed at you anyway realneil as you are only stating facts.

realneil 3 years ago

They are an Information sponge and the information that they crave is yours. Once you give it to them, it belongs completely to them forever

Read this directly from their Terms of Use Agreement that you have to accept to use the service:

By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicenses of the foregoing.

No big deal, you think, because after all you can delete your photos on Facebook can't you?    In fact you can't.    You can't delete your account either.

More from the Terms:

You may remove your User Content from the Site at any time. If you choose to remove your User Content, the license granted above will automatically expire, however you acknowledge that the Company may retain archived copies of your User Content.

Why do they need to legally wrap you up so tightly? (cue video of Robert De-Nero talking about the circle of trust) (now shudder)
rapid1 3 years ago

As far as it all goes I do use Facebook, and regularly. I have all my privacy settings as friends only, and I block most app providers as well because I don't like bulletins all over my facebook. I am not really even criticizing anyone, what i am presenting is my opinion on (which is only my singular opinion anyway) that HH and (Dave and Marco) can do absolutely nothing about the providers requirements in a contest on there site, other than of course not to have the contest at all. So the complaints are totally unaddressable by them. I understand them, and even see there validity. However: in the end there is nothing that can be done because it is not there requirements, but those of a third party.

jonation 3 years ago
Too many people don't take the time to learn how to protect themselves while online ANYWHERE and having to travel a purposely convoluted route on FB clicking through settings pages to protect yourself and turn off their 'features' is a bunch of crap.
I agree, but the whole idea of privacy- really doesn't exist on the Internet. I do not understand why this false sense of security exists. Everything online is done in code. Every code can be decoded. Code can be figured out with the very things we use to access the web. Seems pretty obvious to me.

Hell a lot of credit/debit card information gets stolen off e-commerce sites (your profile or a copy of the transaction). Social security is laughable, thats everywhere.

But, you do not have to put up anything valuable on Facebook. I have a fake name, a spam email account (an old one I use to sign up for sh!t), limited access, i leave off every bit of personal info minus my birthday and my political views (I network with 3rd parties). If anyone hacked into my facebook, they'd just be exposed to my friends and I- calling each other douche-bag or talk about defiling each other's mother. I don't play the completely open profile game, but if I did- I wouldn't lose anything. I would just be bugged waaaaay more than I want to be. There is an API that allows you to see what is visible (to third party businesses) on your FB page if anyone is truly interested. Google it, I haven't used it in a while- no link.

The pictures and everything don't get deleted for like 8months after you delete your account (I think, lifehacker had a great fb privacy series).

Zuckerberg made a business - not a cool free service. It may have started that, but now it is everything but. With 500 million users, you can make alottaaaa coin.

analogmonster 3 years ago

Please reread, or point out where I stated advertisements were based on past emails.  I believe I specified suggested contacts, not advertisements.

and regarding quote "Honestly, I agree with Dave_HH, YOU can choose what information goes on the internet if you take some time to be cautious about what you let be visible"  again, I made no defense for those that were directly responsible for putting up their own information directly, under current user agreement. I made the point that facebook is designed in a manner that allows a more accurate profile  to be "easily " formed using information provided by other people, not just you.

I agree that the nature of the internet is that, what is put on it, stays on it. But It does not excuse facebook's  practices.

I dont know what you are referencing as far as quote "And I don't think we have the right to judge what HH....." another person's post I did not see perhaps? You really think you dont have the right to make judgments regarding how a business operates? How do you form opinions then, exactly? . Do not misunderstand me, I agree generally, facebook is wonderful tool.Regardless of what I think of facebook personally, Incorporating facebook into promotions is good business sense. To ignore it is foolish. And I must make this consideration in my judgment .

Its irresponsible not to make judgments on business practices. Even on just forums. Because (and you know this point already) you are posting here, and I , as a fellow user of this great internet can see it. And I will be able to see it forever. And I am judging you, forming opinions of you, by what you post and where you post.  And of course in most cases these opinions will be forgotten more quickly than they were formed. But it's there (and its normally traceable to your facebook account!).

But this is probably irrelevant as I suspect your post was more a sycophantic attempt to "get noticed" as the loosely stated sweepstakes-but-really-a-contest rules require, than a thoughtful rebuttal. Which is not very helpful to , what I think/hope is the typical forum browser, who is looking for an informed  analysis, discussion, commentary, or debate.

If I am mistaken, then you have my genuine apology. And please, if you think it's worth your time, tell me so. I enjoy knowing when I am wrong.

And I too would love to win that system.

rapid1 3 years ago

Analogmonster if you are referring to my post I personally am not trying to get noticed, not for the contest or any reason. I am just generally stating my opinion, which is very simply put if it is worth it to you to win the contest perform said requirements.

If it is not then do not do so, period! The whining about it is childish, such as I can't believe I have to post on Facebook etc.. Basically the producer of said prize lists it as a requirement. Therefore you have absolutely no choice no matter your opinion of said venue if you indeed want to win said prize.

If the getting noticed comment was not directed at me I apologize for the misconception. I personally do not care if you read or notice my posts. I just post what I think, and I was kind of tired of listening to the whining, because in general even most of the people who have commented on the facebook subject I have read, benefited from, and appreciated there posts in the past.

I just do not see the point in whining it is not HH's fault in any way what the producer of an item or items requires, in a contest format!

analogmonster 3 years ago

My response was meant to be a reply to farfrmnormal. It did not work out that way, most likely a noscript issue or something similar on my end.

I see nothing objectionable about trying to win a prize, and doing it by  "getting noticed" , whatever that means is the way to do it here. I only learned about this forum by mention of this contest/sweepstakes. Its a promotion, designed to generate traffic and user content, and that's all good.  But I saw farfrmnormals reply to my post and interpreted it more as just  a self serving "take sides with the editor" than an actual contribution to a pros/cons of facebook. And that may have been a bit cynical of me. I was just trying to respond to dave_hh 's question about what people may have against facebook.
I partially agree with your view that, if the sacrifice of your information to facebook is not worth the chance at a prize, then simply don't take part. But letting the sponsors of the promotion know that you don't approve of the conditions of entering is basically your vote , as a potential customer, to change the way its done. Don't do it in a whiny way of course, but do voice your complaint/objection.And while I don't condone the method, even whining does get things changed. Squeaky wheel and all that.

enjoy your day.

farfrmnormal 3 years ago

I formed an opinion by posting just that on here earlier.  I am not judging anyone's choice to not join Facebook.  Everyone has their reasons and are entitled them them, just as I am entitled to my opinion.  Yes, you are forming opinions of me based on my posts, but there are many individuals I run into every day that form opinions of me based on what they feel is appropriate.  Voicing an opinion in any situation is usually done to get noticed whether it's to win a contest or not.  I think the opinion I have formed is a genuinely debatable topic - if it wasn't it would never have come up on the forum.

I can appreciate the users who are upset that it is much easier to win something such as this beast of a system because businesses are using tools to better market their business.  It makes it easier for a user to simply log on to facebook, like a couple groups and make a couple posts on facebook and win the system.  I fully believe that the winner should contribute to this forum - it helps the community.  I fully intend to stick around even if I don't win the system.  So Yes, I am writing to get noticed, but not necessarily to win the system.
But maybe we should discuss the Radeon HD 6870..., or some other aspects of this build..., or something.....
Nope. Sorry.

rapid1 3 years ago

As far as it goes the 6870 is only under the very top end Nvidia card right now. There are really several aspects to look at on this issue. The first is heat even there new 580 while it puts out less heat than the previous GPU, it still puts out significant heat well above what a Radeon puts out. It also uses more energy to a pretty high number as well. That to me is two strikes off the bat because I personally like to tweak my system. If I am going to do that in any form both excess heat and energy usage are my number one enemies.

On top of those things only the Nvidia top of the line card (the 580) outperforms the 6870 from what I have seen. The Nvidia card that performs even with it still costs a little bit more, produces a little more heat, and uses more energy. So to me it (the Nvidia) is not really a plus, and as far as it goes only works pretty much even with it anyway.

Now if we were talking the brand spanking new  (still not publicly released) ATI card or the 580 that would be interesting. I personally use a 5870 in one computer, and have a 5850 in Sarah's machine. The 5850 from what I have seen over all performs about even with the 6870 though maybe slight (very slightly) under it performance wise, while the 5870 performs better across the board than any of these GPU's except the 580.

So basically the 6870 to me is a great card! Which makes it no discussion unless we are talking one of those two GPU's. I personally have decided to stick it out until the next ATI release with the 5870, or maybe seeing what Nvidia does price/performance wise one of there cards. The NVIDIA GTX-570's were released yesterday and timely reviews have shown them to be quite capable.

They also have a nice price point @ $350.00 or so,........so the competition is heating up and the ball is now in AMD's court.

Let's see their newest offerings now,.....

Resin 3 years ago

I was either inspired by 'MC Marco' to go pimp this contest, or perhaps merely challenged by a certain 'not all atention is good attention post", so I went to some of the old forums I have haunted in the past and started some threads for this contest.

http://www.mortalonline.com/forums/56579-pretty-nice-hardware-give-away-contest.html

http://www.moddb.com/forum/thread/hothardwaredigital-storm-pc-giveaway

http://rockpapershotgun.com/rpsforum/topic.php?id=3807

http://www.darkdemonscrygaia.com/showthread.php?t=11266

I've been trying to just stick to forums where I've been a participating member, though the second two are so large no one probably knows me there. I wouldn't want to give the appearance of being a spammer.

good attention?

I bet some of you could take this concept and do it better. Especially if you belong to giant guilds or play more popular games.

Just be sure to include the part where I suggest that they do not enter the contest but instead politely suggest that I should be the winner.

and another one:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2948069#post2948069

I'm planning on monitoring these threads if there is interest, but not bumping them if there is not. Etiquette is important after all.

I figure this is a lot better than my facebook page. Who here's going to one up me?

rapid1 4 years ago

It is kind of like Microsoft Dave. You always here people talking about how everyone should drop Windows and use something else. The problem is Windows is compatible with everything, not to mention is used by almost the entire planet if you use a computer. Are there options, yes tons of them, does Microsoft hurt technology, yes maybe in some ways in the past they have. The real thing; is that the PC, or computers would not be anywhere near what they are today, not to mention the internet, the need for it, or even smart phones as well as many other things were it not for a common relatively easy to use way to use them in the get go. Microsoft gave us that, no matter if it was a ripoff from someone else, or less free than any other OS, or whatever.

Either way this is a very nice machine, which I know that as it always happens some lucky HH user will walk away with at the end of the contest.

I would really like to have this computer...

that said posting this to facebook page when 90% of the people ther my family, co-workers, etc. will have no interest, well it just seems kind of like the behavior of a spambot.

Still, I would really like to have this computer...

Maybe I'll do something with groups, but then I wonder if that would effect my chances to win.

I guess I could just work on forum recognition first, sounds like this is not the first or last give away you've had. Nice site by the way, wouldn't have known about it if not for digital storm.

Dave_HH 4 years ago

Well, some of your family/friends may have an interest but if you just note it as something you're entering, I'm sure most anyone would get it as to why you're posting. Good luck! Groups is fine too actually.

Stick around Resin give away contests are very common here, as is a healthy forum, very active contribution form the site's owners, and many other positive things as well. As far as the Facebook issue goes it is basically the widest, most effective, and lowest cost form of advertising. So I know why the companies insist on it.

rmstiles09 3 years ago

First of all I would like to agree with Resin on his post earlier that if it were not for Digital Storm I would not have known about this site at all. HotHardware.com definitely seems to be a very good forum site that is unbiased in almost every way and as rapid1 has suggested several times I will gladly stick around and see what this site truly has to offer for all kinds of information, especially giveaway contests like this one. But enough of the complaining about Facebook and blatantly saying pick me pick me like you're at a concert and trying to get onstage. I believe we should be talking about this particular computer and the components that make up this computer and what you like and don't like about them, and what you would change if you could. For the average computer gamer/user this set up is perfect for any application, but for enthusiast such as myself I really like to push the limits of my computers and allow them to perform at their max. To do so with this particular computer there are only a few minor changes I would make. First I would add in a SATA 3 (6.0Gb/s) SSD to truly harness what this MB offers while using the supplied 1TB HDD as a place to store all of your documents, music, pictures etc. For those that don't know a SSD will significantly decrease your boot time, increase the speed at which all of your programs start, and for the gamers you will benefit from the blistering speeds and faster game performance. As for the processor the Intel Core i7 950 clocked at 3.06Ghz will easily provide you with all the processing power you need. But if Digital Storm is willing an overclock to somewhere around 4.0Ghz would never hurt either. :) On to the memory. Equipped with 6GB DDR3 Triple Channel the computer will not struggle at all with any memory consuming task. Although not much information is truly provided about the ODD I would assume that it would be a DVD/CD burner which would be one of the more useful drives in today's every day computer user. Now down to one of the largest blessings this computer has to offer, the video card. The ATI Radeon HD 6870 1GB card is a beast no matter how you look at it. Offering the user anywhere from 1050MHz - 4200MHz Effective memory clock and a Core Clock of 900MHz - 940MHz along side 1GB DDR5 memory this single card will be able to wow every consumer. Now on to one of Digital Storms 'prized features' as I like to call it, liquid cooling! The Astek Liquid CPU Cooler supplied in this computer will get the processor cold, keep it cold, and will always be cold. Although it is not as impressive as Digital Storms Sub-Zero Liquid Chilled system featured here: http://hothardware.com/News/Digital-Storm-Announces-SubZero-Liquid-Chilled-System/ you will easily be able to perform any task without compromising the thermal safety of your system. Now that I have laid out the grounds for all the parts inside this wonderful computer, lets talk about what brings it all together the MB. The MB that drives this computer is the phenomenal ASUS Sabertooth X58. This military looking MB provides some of today's most sought after chips (Intel X58/Ich10R) along with TUF components that actually meet military standard. After giving you these great starting blocks ASUS decided to throw in some extras the CeraM!X Heatsink Coating Tech. which provides a larger area for heat dissipation with the revolutionary ceramics-coating technology. E.S.P. [Efficient Switching Power Design] - Optimal power efficiency for key components and to top it off its future proofed with true USB 3.0 and SATA 6gb/s support. To power all of these components Digital Storm is providing you with a 750W power supply that is Digital Storm Certified. This PS should give you plenty of overhead room with this build and provide enough power if you wish to add in a few more components yourself. Finally to wrap it all up Digital Storm is using the Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced computer case. This case will provide you with all the clean lines to make your computer look great while also giving you room to expand and add optional equipment as you see fit. I will not go into detail on the operating system provided for I see that as a personal choice of the computer user as to what he/she likes to use. I am fully open to any questions comments and/or suggestions any of you might have and I wish the best of luck to everyone whom is entering this contest. I am in it to win it!!!

Thank you HotHardware.com and Digital Storm for holding this contest.

If you look around the HotHardware site and start going through various posts, you'll see that there is a lot of good information and discourse going on here.

The reviews are good ones (well thought out and executed) and the guys and gals doing them will say if there is something that they don't like about a product too. This keeps it real and we appreciate their candor. They're not just a bunch of mouthpieces for advertisers.

Their honesty has helped me to avoid a few lemons and grab a few pearls in the past.

Best of luck to all.

Posting on Fb is great for expanding the reader base, its viral/socialmedia marketing. I'm actually in that class right now...

Facebook is ranked higher as a search engine than google now.

resin 3 years ago

"blatantly saying pick me pick me like [I'm] at a concert and trying to get onstage"

-because I don't have the knowledge base to speak about how I would fine tune this system - but, hey I'm reading up.

I can say this though, what has impressed me most about digital storm, the reason I was lurking around their forums, found this awesome giveaway and thus hothardware is their track record with customer service and support. Even the best of computers will no longer be cutting edge a few years down the line, but their is something about those warranties and  technical support and the willingness to stand by their products that really impress me.

There is also something about an Intel I7 950  3.06 GHz (Quad Core) that really impresses me, but thats a different thing.

rmstiles09 3 years ago
There is also something about an Intel I7 950 3.06 GHz (Quad Core) that really impresses me
Although I can not speak for Resin on what exactly impresses him about this processor, this processor is the entry level quad core onto the LGA 1366 platform. Although that might not seem like much this allows you to really use all of what the i7 class has to offer with the hyper threading, and Intel's wide dynamic execution. Best of all you can really overclock these suckers. Since this processor has gotten you onto the LGA 1366 platform and you don't mind tearing off an arm and leg you can easily upgrade to the Intel Core i7-970 Gulftown (yes that's the 6 core) :-).

@ Jonation, didn't know that about FB being ranked higher than google, interesting...

FB is huge for business right now. It makes perfect sense to do marketing/contests there. Every time I hit like, or share a contest, every one of my friends will see this post. It is a way to expand your message exponentially. I really don't have a problem with my friends knowing that I entered a contest, and don't feel like im whoring out my account. At least its better than all the farmville and mafia crap I see on my news feed.

jonation 3 years ago
@ Jonation, didn't know that about FB being ranked higher than google,
According to a couple (paid) reports it actually has... That blew my mind when I learned about it.
Along with a long talk about facebook ads, but thats neither here or there.

I feel that I'm whoring out my account- do I care? No, not at all for a i7-950 system. Whore away!!!!
It's like doing a medical study, you sacrifice a little time and a piece of you for something. Well thats any job really.

Hey and all your farmville friends will tell there friends, and they will tell there and mafia whatever friends, and they will tell all there castle age friends, who will then tell there zinga poker friends, and pretty soon everyone in the world knows for giving away one 2000 dollar PC. That sounds like a good idea to me.

OSunday 3 years ago

Allright I would absolutely LOVE to enter this contest, im 16 and have so many potential things to gain from a new computer like this and so do my family members I would share it with:]

My mom owns an advertising agency with alot of media and design work to be done, and with a computer with 6GB's of RAM and ATI's 6870 gpu this could easily jumpstart my work into graphic design or something similar by having the resources and a powerful enough computer to start getting into the field!

Okay I'm guessing that to win though, you'd probably have to follow all of the suggestions, post to facebook and etc and a little bit of above and beyond because obviously you're not gonna hand away a $2000 computer to just anybody but im at a little dilemma...

I HATE posting technology things, or anything business/marketing related on my facebook and becoming and advertising billboard because

1. Thats not what I use my facebook for, or what its meant to be used for

2. I'm pretty much a secret nerd, and this would definitely get some wth responses from my friends and family, and at 16 highschool is a very superficial, judgemental world so allthough I embrace my nerd as much as possible I don't neccesarily wan't to be broadcasting it haha

rapid1 3 years ago

Yeah you just have to win age does not matter from what I understand as long as you have a guardianship holding individual to sign for you. So age does not matter! I will also tell you that Dave and Marco are big pranksters to, so if they have you standing alone on a podium you might wanna check all side supports as one might be rigged (which is why your the only one on the podium). Of course I know that was in your dream's as well. SO you should be OK :p

Resin 3 years ago

In practical terms most of my 'private data' that facebook steals are things I'm perfectly happy to share.

Imagine if all the lousy spam I get actually was tailored to things I was interested in.

However the sneaky way they seem to go about it is somewhat annoying and alarming.

I think one thing this might lead to is an opportunity for another company to come in and do the same social networking game but prove themselves and bill themselves as privacy advocates and clean up where facebook has dropped the ball.

Optix 3 years ago

Hey, if people get their panties in a wad about having to use Facebook to enter a contest then that's fine.  One less ballot from someone else increases my chance of winning!

In other news I read an article where Facebook is trying to copyright the word/term face.  Yes, it really is as dumb as it sounds.

I still choose to share my information or not. I have a Gmail account and I know that they collect information on it. They don't hide it and they don't let everyone sip from the well of my information. I haven't been deluged by advertising and e-mails because of my Gmail account either.

Its certainly easy enough to do, I did that when I was trying out some game that I didn't want f-ing with my account, but usually your fake id won't have as many friends. I considered the notion of using my fake id to make it look like someone cared about my real id's contest post and laud me as someone who really deserves to win but then dismissed the notion as being to corny and transparent.

I completed all the necessary obligations to enter this contest, including sending in the email. I figured that i would get some sort of reply to say that digital storm received the email, but haven't gotten anything. Has anyone else had this problem or is it just that there is no response sent at all?

Heya rmstiles,

I don't believe there is an auto-reply, no.  Regardless, if you didn't get a bounce, I'm sure it went through.

I may ping DS to check the list just to see how many we have signed up now.

Thanks

i dont think you get any notifications at all. because i did too follow all the guidelines its just an entry. but most likely you'll get an email from them if you win.

How do you enter the contest through email?

and will me being literally, very new to the forums effect my chances of wining?

I literally joined at almost the same time this giveaway was announced

I post to almost everything I have an opinion on, which will hopefully help me on "getting noticed" haha

rmstiles09 3 years ago

No it will not affect your chances, I joined these forums because of the contest also. :) but yes you do have to send an email to digital storm. The exact instructions are at the beginning of this forum.

I joined in may and won a rig in October :)

rapid1 3 years ago

Yeah the date of your joining does not matter from everything I have seen. I have been here for several years now (3 I believe). I have even seen someone win 2 systems in rather short order right Neil.
Ick! I have even seen someone win 2 systems in rather short order,....right Neil? Ick!
Yes I won twice, but only one of the systems that I won was from this site. (the best one by far) The second one, just a few months later, I won directly from Intel, by participating in one of their contests. Oh, and I won a car in Las Vegas too, but that was years ago, and not part of HotHardware either.

Right now, I'm entered in six contests for computer systems or parts, and I'll let you know if I win.

rapid1 3 years ago

Oh; got ya, I thought both of the systems were from here. The Intel one was the dual processor skull trail wasn't it?

realneil 3 years ago
The Intel one was the dual processor skull trail wasn't it?
No, it was a i5-750 Quad core,  with 8GB of GSkill DDR3 1600 RipJaws Ram, a BluRay Drive, a 1TB Seagate HDD and a XFX Radeon HD5850 1GB Black Video Card. It came in a Cooler Master Centurion RC690 Case. It has an Acer 22" Flat Screen display, a all in one card reader, and a keyboard/mouse pair. They gave me 3 PC Games with it too.

This is the system I won from Intel directly. Not here at HotHardware.

mentaldisorder 3 years ago

Heh, I've been here for quite awhile.  Can't say that I ever won a rig, granted my priorities are on school all these years.  I did however win amdcrankitup a rig...and I got some parts from HH.  But anyway, good luck to those participating.

realneil 3 years ago

When I won the system from here, It was dependent on forum participation and content of your posts. (the good old days)

Since their contest deliberations are kept between themselves,.......I never knew for sure, the exact thing that made them pick me to win the i7 rig, but I think it may have had to do with someone else posting about winning it and then selling it off to buy something better. I posted, telling the guy off about his post. (my best guess anyway & I have wondered too)

Then again, who knows why they choose one instead of another? I usually agree with their selection of who wins each time, even though I have no part in any of it. Many of the winners here were deserving when they won. A few were just plain lucky, and naming the Podcast came down to smarts, pure and simple, even though someone disagreed with it. He had several good suggestions that I saw.

But I am thankful for my prizes, and I've tried to become a permanent fixture around here with my honest opinions, and by providing help for those with questions whenever I know the answers. I could have just went on my merry way and not looked back.

I know that the chances of winning again here are slim, they're gonna spread it around a little, and I don't blame them for it. It's the right thing to do. So I'm not hanging just to continue taking prizes home. I'm just here because I enjoy myself with you Mooks most of the time.

One more thing for you new guys, the odds of winning here really are as good as it gets.

I did however win amdcrankitup a rig...and I got some parts from HH.  This is true and I will never forget what a generous thing you done! For those of you who were not here at that time, I would not have this Rig which I think was the Economic Sweepstakes Giveaway  if it had,nt been for the generosity of this mentaldisorder and HH. And of course give it up to his skills in a gaming contest for the win against the other winners. What were the odds of me winning!!!!

Apparently better than I could imagine but this guy must be a force to be reckoned with in an online gaming battle because he played for me and come away with the win. And even more so how many people would play to win and do it just to give this great rig to someone else? Not many and I promise ( mental), HH (Marco and Dave) it has been put to good use well taken care of  and has handled some heavy test in the ocing field. But most of all it is one of the best gifts and the best case of generousity ever!

So without  stepping on anyones toes because I wish everyone here luck I silently have been voting for a awesome win for mentaldisorder because he does deserve it.

For all you that are new to HH this is by far IMO one of the best sites on the net for tech news, tech help, due to all the great people in our forums that are always willing to help and all the latest and greatest reveiws. Thanks for the kind words AMD!  I'm glad the rig is doing you good.  How is Tanka's cooler treating you?  Did you hit 4ghz yet?

realneil 3 years ago

@mental: "Did you hit 4ghz yet?"

4GHz. must be the Holy Grail.Wink I see people mentioning it a lot.

My little i5-750 system gets 3.8 GHz, but not any higher. But it's not bad for Air Cooling and letting my ASRock P55 PRO Mainboard do all of the work to get it there.

(one click in the BIOS, Big Smile and it's stock speed is 2.6GHz.)

My i7 system really doesn't OC too well, but I think that has to do with the fact that it's an Intel board and they're really not that concerned with overclocking to begin with, so it's not an option that they enable much on their boards. Just think about what they could do if they really wanted to,....Crying  (BTW: the Intel board IS rock solid stable and totally dependable too, It's QUALITY is way beyond expectations)

I've thought about buying another ASRock board to see what the i7 will do inside of it. with the water cooling it may see the "Holy Grail" 'eh?

mentaldisorder 3 years ago

You better hit 4ghz on water.  I was having issues with my Q6600 getting past 3.2ghz.  Got my H50 a couple of weeks ago and have been watching the temps before I try and OC again.

rapid1 3 years ago

"4GHz. must be the Holy Grail.Wink I see people mentioning it a lot" Yeah I have heard that or the same in other words many times. However; even though I have an i7 system which I know will go to it, the performance difference really is not very much. I have OC'd my system all the way up to 4.1, but it runs hot, I can get it to run stable for a while. While 4.0 and 3.9are more stable 3.8 is the most stable, but I still don't see the point other than the challenge of doing it, and getting it stable. I actually actively see more long term stable performance oc'ing the memory with the CPU at a modest OC. I can get my memory to run a 1333 speed at 6,6,6,18 which seem to be the best all around performance all the way around.

So I think the 4Ghz is more of a bragging right as well as one I have beat at 4.1Ghz. I don't run it anywhere near that all the time! I run on a Gigabyte MB, and love the board personally. I can tweak everything top to bottom, they keep it updated well also, which is even more important to me really. As far as water cooling I would love to do it, but have not tried it yet. The money has not really come up free as of yet, of course I have also been unemployed unless I want to go on the road for quite some time as well (2 years or just over that).

I can get contract work generally, and have from time to time, but it is always as a field engineer. The last one was with Teksystems, I was basically on the road for three weeks, and installing POS (point of Sale) systems for wally world on the West coast. I visited Wisconsin, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and California. I also drove roughly 9,000 miles. Luckily it looks like I have a position with a new company TASQ that will hopefully start either on the 13th or just after New Years (because it is the holiday season).

We will see Right :)

lifeskills 3 years ago

I run my AMD 1090T @ 4 ghz all the time.  I noticed a huge difference in folding points from the stock 3.2.   But I havn't hit the holy grail with my new i7.  Still working on temps and such.

I always thought it was funny how people talk about 4ghz a lot, when every different model will OC differently.  For example, One CPU is at 4 ghz with a 10% overclock, and another is at 4ghz with a 30% overclock, who wins?  Well, the 30% OC is more extreme, but they can both toot the 4ghz horn...

Based on how easily my 890fx/1090t combo overclocked, I'd love to try one of the 970's like freejet just won.

amdcrankitup 3 years ago
Thanks for the kind words AMD!  I'm glad the rig is doing you good.  How is Tanka's cooler treating you?  Did you hit 4ghz yet?
No I havent quiet got there yet on that 3 core but I havent gave up yet! I did activate the 4th core and got  that 3.8ghz but Im gng to try some more ram and some more tweaking to see if I can get that 4ghz. It could be the chip itself might not be up to par but Im planning on getting the 970 now that Asus has certified it with a new bios update which I have no doubt I can hit it then but I want to hit it with my current  BE720 X3 before I go to the 970! If it will of course do it. I havent gave up my health has been giving me problems a lot here lately and I just havent had the energy to do anything! But the Cool It cooler has held its own so far just cant remember any numbers as far as temp readings right now! Thanks for asking if and when I do hit it I,ll be sure to put it in big bold letters and a screenshot!!!

I truly appreciate the 'elders' of this site if I may, for sharing their insight on what they won and how they have won them. I would truly love to win a system from this site or any other thing also. But with that said I although I have only been a member here for a few weeks I am really enjoying the constant updates on new technologies and the honest comments that people are leaving about what they think is good or bad. Win or lose I really enjoy being with this forum and plan to stick around.

rapid1 3 years ago

I won the system in my signature on here. It is also listed in my details on my profile.

Believe it or not I had been around for a very short while when I saw the first system given away. I initially stayed around in hopes of winning the next contest. I finally did so (although it took a year or so), and it has been a great system ever since (it was built by Cyberpower), and I did a little upgrading personally, which is the CPU cooler, and I added my two hard drives which were pretty new then.

I needed it when I won as one of mine and Sarah's PC's at home had blown out. So I won the one in my sig, I took the amalgamated one she had (I had built it from pieces of the old PC that blew out, and a new MB processor). So when I won I took the MB/CPU and my full tower aluminum case (I have had for quite some time(built my AMD XP system in it)), got a new GPU, and ram, and wallah she had a PC of her own (with the drive from the PC I had won, and her PC which were the same size).

Either way, after my initial joining I stuck around, because I had become a part of this site by then. Not to mention Dave and Marco have always done a real bang up job on this site top to bottom. I have been on the internet, and into computers personally as well as professionally since this whole Internet thing took off. I had used computers before that for some time, but had never been into the as much. I remember when AOL started (I think I was a Compuserve member then)

Shortly after that I started working on PC's, and have been building systems for family, and friends as well as myself since shortly after that. My first one was a Prerelease PII 400 with a top of the line ATI All in Wonder Pro (also a Prerelease part), which I still have sitting in the basement. It actually even still works, although I am sure it could not handle anything from today, it ran DOOM great :)

Either way I have been a member at many sites (IE: Anandtech, Toms, the original Boot (now called Maximum PC), and CPU sites, and many, many others. This site as well as the members here just feel right. Not to mention the site is run correctly, the reviews are unbiased as well as bringing it to you straight, did I mention I think Dave and Marco run it right? I cannot see a time I would not want to use this as a forum personally, it just feels like home to me now.

As far as it goes winners are chosen from what I can see with there own personal input. The more you add, help, comment, and bring to the site is why you are chosen as a winner I think. I am not saying I know exactly how they are picked, but that is the impression I get, but I think it is more than just your posts in a contest as well. I think it is more of an over all what you bring to the site, not that posts during a contest do not help.

By the way if anyone on here ever needs any help with anything just hit me up on the site or go to my profile, and click the email link. I generally get back to you pretty quick.

This certainly is pretty... even with ATI+Intel combo :D I have a grudge against ATI for the driver errors with my 3rd to last computer. >.>;; Time to drop that right?! ^_^

lifeskills 3 years ago

I have 2 HD5850's from ATI and they are nice. The drivers are good too. I would drop that grudge now, becasue these new AMD cards are supposed to be good. Much better Crossfire scalability. And They have also dropped something; the ATI branding. Thats right, so it is actually an AMD Intel combo.

You seem to be doing fine so far,......I hear you.

You can also try reading the published items in the technology news sections and commenting about the technology being introduced.

(I honestly don't know jack-S about a lot of it and I KNOW it shows, but so what?) I still post, and I won a very nice i7-870 System here.

Maybe you could start a few threads in the forums about things that you DO know a lot about. We'd like to hear what's interesting, from everyone and anyone, even if it's only something like learning how to grow worms for fishing season, or for our gardens,......or what's the best way to de-ice your car's windows in the cold winter mornings.

I started a Joke thread and a Photo thread.

Go for it,......

Welcome all new comers for sure.

You know the best thing about HH, and one which I have still as of yet been unable to figure out. In general good people stick around, and trolls, flamers, spam bots etc just disappear.

It is however a great thing. Dave and Marco seem to attract positive things I guess. Or maybe they are just exceptionally good site admins, and or there site admin is such.

Either was this is a great site, and great individuals seem to stick around, and are also generally very helpful, smart, and technically knowledgeable individuals as well.

Good luck 2 all :)
and one which I have still as of yet been unable to figure out. In general good people stick around, and trolls, flamers, spam bots etc just disappear
Lot's of effort happening in the background to make this so. The Admins have been tweaking the site allot lately to reduce the amount of SPAM that appears here and it's working well. I know, because when I see it, I'm deleting it, and it's happening less now.

It does help the overall user experience though.

rapid1 3 years ago

I agree it just amazes me; if you go to ANY other forum, there are trolls primarily, and spam bots at least noticeably easily visible, but they NEVER seem to be seen here except for a now and again add link for a clothing/hardware/software site, and even that is once every week or 3.

rrplay 3 years ago

I liked the way the admins here took care of some posts in various threads last weekend  ...

There is quite a few really useful guides over at DS &  they have always seemed to me to be well-thought accurate and well presented. Just like a lot of the reviews here at HH it takes a lot of technical background to discus and a whole lot of other professional presentation skills to do it as well as they are done.

Some might say that I could be 'blowing -smoke ' or whatever .I am simply acknowledging  the quality of information in reviews ,guides and the vids.

Being a bit active on HH this week following a few reviews and thread allowed me to be open and change some overall personal preferences and some outlooks , opinions I previously had.

very nice surprise!   thanks...hence the Instant Winner remarks Big Smile

AND  really hope that I may  win this Digital Storm Special Ops system

I entered! I use Facebook but was not used to having to take a screenshot, had to look online to learn how to do it. My husband takes care of me since I had an accident about 12 years ago, and he makes sure I have a great computer to use, but hasn't upgraded his in over 5 years, and even then he kept his old system and just added some Ram and a newer video card. Now it won't even download updates for the game he plays, his computer doesn't meet the specs for the downloader!

Good Luck all! I am going to wander the forums, maybe I'll learn nifty new things about computers!

Ok; just to help with his computer, this is the best tweaking guide period ( http://www.tweakhound.com/ ). It allows you to tweak to your desired level of understanding, and for any usage requirements as well as experience levels. I personally would tell you but it would be a very, very long email :) Hopefully this will help with your husbands computer and it's performance levels. He also has tweaking guides for XP/ Vista/ and 7 on the task bar to the left of your screen when on the site. Follow his recommendations, and make sure you back up your or his current OS before you do anything, but his tweaking guides are the most in depth, and accurate I have seen anywhere period.

Could not agree with you more on the tweakhound guides .they are definitely  the best avail.

Maybe we could  sticky that link  in a Tweak the OS "Guides" ' forum section and get it  rolling.

New bfbc2 vietnam + new computer = Happy Fat

Four days left.

FREE2LIVE 3 years ago

WOW this RIG comes with bfbc2 vietnam????

that is sweet!!!

i have a few things lined up for this, WoW, 3D studio Max, Adobe CS5...other programs that run smooth on it. i wish the RAM was atleast 8gbs DDR3. my M11x has 8 and its a sweet machine!

Optix 3 years ago
i have a few things lined up for this, WoW
BWAHAHAHAHA!

I always laugh when someone says that in reference to a high end system.  That will run flawlessly on an E2180 and a 8600GTS with 4GB of DDR2.

Gotta put a keyboard muzzle on you though.

FREE2LIVE 3 years ago

i know WoW doesnt need that much performance, i get good details with my duo core SU7300 with NVIDIA GT335M GeForce with 8gbs RAM. their are other games than need more performance, like when i play Call of duty, my m11x goes loud and heats up fast. its running on its highest performance. i OC that b*tch! lol

FREE2LIVE 3 years ago

This is the kind of Gaming Rig I need, My M11x is getting a little out-of-date because I am still on Duo Core. With this I7 950 processor I can do more stuff with it and put it to use, because not only am I a gamer, but i am going in to designing with Adobe After-Effect and Programming with Visual Studio. Winning this machine will be a HUGH break through.

P.S. Dave and Macro, if my hypothesis is correct about how you partly choose the winners, could you please not count my absence against me. It might greatly increase my chances of winning this great computer. :)

rmstiles09 3 years ago

I truly have no idea, but I imagine they wouldn't due to the time differences across the country. My best bets are that they will close the entry and have the drawing sometime tomorrow and then let the winner and the others know.

Inspector 3 years ago

This contest does not end for another 27-28 or so hours... what are u guys talking about?

FREE2LIVE 3 years ago

i am clueless like everyone else...who happens to be clueless. do you know how they will announce the winner??

rmstiles09 3 years ago

I see your point, but it all depends how you look at it. The contest rules say, "The contest will run through December 23rd at which point we'll announce the winner." I look at it as it runs till midnight of the 23rd, but you might also be right as it could possibly run all the way through the end of the 23rd. It is all a play on words and how you choose to look at it.  But that said I believe we can all say that it is really getting down to the wire for this contest. So good luck to all.

FREE2LIVE 3 years ago

thanks for the heads up! good luck to you as well!

DRegan 3 years ago

Ahhh! I gotta get this third post!

DRegan 3 years ago

Yay! last post! Anyway, I really believe that I should be the one to win this amazing computer due to the fact that I am in my freshman year in high school, and I am trying to get a job either in programming, software development, etc. and I have almost no resources to attempt this with. I am currently learning how to program BASIC, and I also have a lot of high end games that I want to look at (and play a little :P) but I am stuck with a store bought computer from 2003 that has an Intel core 2 duo processor and onboard graphics..which obviously means that EVERYTHING lags like crazy! My family doesn't really have very much money at the moment (especially because of the economy) which means that we can't buy any software programs/ new computers/ etc. So I really hope that you take my situation into account when choosing the winner of this fantastic computer.

Thank you,

Daniel

dodgers2213 3 years ago
unless they have like 3 badass rigs already. In which case...you jerk!
What if we just have two Bad-Ass Rigs already?
sorry buddy but this is not a charity, it's a contest. with your situations i have it a bit more difficult than you,
Talk about difficult, I got home the other day and the dog bit me. Then the other dog pissed on my leg. Then I tripped on the lit-up wire reindeer in the front yard and knocked a tooth out. It knocked me out and someone stole my wallet while I was unconscious. My neighbor thinks I'm a communist because I'm originally from California, ("Boy, You Ain't from Around Here, Are You?") I see him with a camera filming my every move now. The neighbor on the other side thinks I'm Gay because I'm originally from California, and he keeps on flashing me!

My daughter just told me that she's pregnant and her and the three fathers are moving into the basement and plan to start a Grunge Band funded with the help of some guy from Columbia. While we were gone the other day, someone broke in and swiped all of the computers in the house,.....they got the TV's and all the rest of the electronics too. So I'm sending this message using an Abacus wired to a a 9Volt battery while sitting in the tub with cold water in it 'cause we can't afford to pay the hot water and electric bills anymore. Every time I fart, the gas bubbles to the surface and causes an atmospheric disturbance that somehow connects me to this thread so I can communicate some more. But I keep passing out from the smell and have almost drowned three times trying to post this,...........*POP*..........*POP*..................Oh! I'm awake again!

Where was I,.................

Oh Yeah,........Poor me.

dodgers2213 3 years ago

I think that everyone should just relax about prior winners posting in the threads. If you stop to think about it, do you really think that someone, anyone, will win back to back systems from the Admins?

Whisper Really? Whisper

(*Hint*: it's never happened before)

Consider that many of us are people who have been a part of things here on this site for a long time.

We'll be here after this contest is over, and still after the next ten of them too. We're regulars and we enjoy being here. That's why I'm posting on this and a lot of other threads. That's why other system winners are still here and posting away.

It's gonna be alright,...........

xaed 3 years ago

Well, that's not meant. I didn't mean it in the sense of winning back to back. I just meant that if you already have a kick *** system, it would make you look like an a-hole if you joined.

realneil 3 years ago
Well, that's not meant. I didn't mean it in the sense of winning back to back. I just meant that if you already have a kick *** system, it would make you look like an a-hole if you joined.
Technically speaking, anyone who posts has thrown their hat in the ring for this and all of the PC prizes that are given away here. But I'm not gonna stop participating because someone thinks I'm greedy for wanting the prize. I already know it will go to another, and that's the point I was trying to make. None of us prior winners expect to win it, but we're here on our favorite site participating. Hope that you don't mind.

So if you think that I'm an A-Hole, so be it.
