Government Discovers That Teen Girls Text A Lot

2007 is shaping up to be the first year when spending on cellphone services surpasses the cost of land line phones, according to a study by the US government and backed up by industry information. Anybody with a teenage girl at home has known this was coming for quite some time.

"What we're finding is there's a huge move of people giving up their land line service altogether and using cell phones exclusively," said Allyn Hall, consumer research director for market research firm In-Stat.

As recently as 2001, U.S. households spent three times as much on residential phone services as they did on cell phones. But the expansion of wireless networks has made cell phones more convenient, and a wider menu of services, including text messaging, video and music, has made it easier for consumers to spend money via their cell phone.

"Frankly, I'd be shocked if (households) don't spend more on cell phones at this point," said Andrew Arthur, vice president of market solutions at Mediamark Research & Intelligence.

To be sure, when corporate cell-phone use is counted, overall U.S. spending surpassed land line spending several years ago, analysts said.

So it's official: consumers are talking less and less on land lines, and more and more on cellphones. And every single one of them is sitting next to you in the movie theater.

werts a cell fone?  Really i dont see why people need them i mean for goodness sake do we really need to talk that much.  My cell phone is like 4 years old, no color screen, greyscale with diff color backlites, and i pay like 15 dollars every 3 months to keep the phone active and it costs me 25 cents a min to talk on it for the first 10min every day, then it drops to 10cents a min.  I hardly use my phone, it stays in my car with me for emergencies.  I make like a grand total maybe 1 call a month, if that.  I dont see why people have to have all this other stuff with their phones and use them all the time, maybe im just weird.

Drago:
maybe im just weird.

If weird is NOT being like the rest of society then one may call me weird for not living on my cell phone too....

I talk a little more than you Drago but probably use about 100 minutes a month (about 40 of which my mom will take up when she calls me to 'see how things are'). Please tell me HOW in the lords name a person can talk on a phone for 2000 minutes a month!??! Obviously they musn't have jobs or go to school -- or maybe its like the girls in my math class that sit in back of the room and whisper on their phones for the entire hour.

Land lines are totally just for the internet now. Glad AT&T has to offer naked DSL as part of their AT&T/SBC merger agreement. Finally got rid of my useless land line.
