When December starts winding down, Google offers up a roundup of the year’s top search terms in its Year-End Zeitgeist report. It’s an annual look at the people, events, and humorous miscellany that captured the world’s attention.
Topping the list this year was Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa and global beacon of strength and peace who passed away recently. The Boston Marathon tragedy was #6, and the mysterious North Korea, always a baffling and intriguing topic for Westerners, slid in at #10.
The deaths of celebrities Paul Walker (#2) and Cory Monteith (#4) were major search trends, as was pop culture curiosity the Harlem Shake (#5). The Royal Baby, the offspring of Prince William and Kate Middleton, took the #7 spot.
When it came to tech, 2013 saw us most interested in the iPhone 5s (#3), the Samsung Galaxy S4 (#8), and the PlayStation 4 (#9). Interestingly, the Xbox One didn’t crack the top ten while the PS4 did.
