Google Chromecast To Get Screen Mirroring Feature With Android 4.4.1 Update Soon

Google’s Android 4.4.1 (KitKat) was detailed last week, and among the many items in the changelog is something that indicates that Chromecast will soon offer screen mirroring. This would bring the same sort of function to the tiny streaming stick that products such as AirPlay, AllShare, Xbox SmartGlass, and the like offer.

Cynaogen Inc.’s Koushik Dutta called out the key bits of code from the changelog in a Google+ post.

Dutta also noted that the screen mirroring is only available to Google and OEMs, which is somewhat limiting because third-party developers may not be able to work with it. For now, it seems that it’s a Chromecast-only feature, which is a shame because Android is supposed to be all about openness.

The new API follows Google’s rebranding of Google TV as “Nexus TV” amid rumors of a massive relaunch of the search giant’s web-based TV-related services next year.
