Foxconn to Manufacture Apple Tablet PC: Report
Foxconn, the company responsible for manufacturing a number of products for Apple, including the iPhone, has been slated to be the manufacturer of the much-hyped and much-rumored Apple tablet PC, according to reports.
The Apple tablet PC has previously been rumored to be hitting the market in the first quarter of 2010. According to Digitime's unnamed sources, initial shipments from Foxconn will be in the range of 300,000-400,000. Additionally, the sources indicated the new tablet will have a 10.6" display, the size that was previously rumored. The report went further and speculated that Foxconn might secure panels from its subsidiary Innolux Display.
Further, the report added that "the sources indicated they believe the tablet PC features will focus more on e-book functionality rather than music, and that based on Apple's marketing strategy, long battery life, quick Internet connectivity and an easy-to-use user interface will be key features of the device."
Amazon should probably start worrying about its Kindle device, if the e-book rumor is correct.
Foxconn's last big news was rather embarrassing to both Apple and Foxconn. After losing a set of next-generation iPhones, Sun Danyong, 25, a Foxconn employee committed suicide when he jumped off a company dormitory building. Allegedly, he had been "roughed up" by other Foxconn employees who searched his apartment.
As a result of this incident, Foxconn promised to pay his family a stipend for life.

Apple's already got a lot of experience and a large installed iTunes base. The second they start adding books, Amazon's going to have a real fight on their hands. This is great news for everyone, even Kindle owners. The next time Amazon is told to do something like "disable text to speech or see us in court" they will probably fight back a bit harder - knowing how it will hurt them competitively to give in. We might also see increased innovation and lower prices too! |

I like the idea of a tablet, but I hope Apple makes sure that Foxconn takes better care of their employees. |
