Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 Released

Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 Released

Not only did Mozilla release the Firefox 3.0 Beta 5 code today, it also announced when RC1 will code-freeze, as it closes in on completion of Firefox 3.0

As it races to the goal post, Mozilla.org announced that beta 5 of Firefox 3 is available and that the code for release candidate 1 will be frozen on April 8.

Beta 5 offers big improvements over previous release including enhanced stability, performance and  web compatibility and user interface enhancements, including changes to the look-and-feel of Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OSX and Linux themes.

The updated beta also offers enhanced integration with Windows, Mac and Linux, including improved Windows icons and native user interface widgets , as well as a more native Mac OSX look and feel with support for OSX widgets, a combined back and forth button and growl notifications support. On the Linux side, Firefox default icons and menus use the native GTK themes.

We tried it, and it seems much improved.  Don't forget, however, that many extensions may no longer work for you.

I'm still awaiting the real release.  But never the less, it's good to see progress is being made.  How's the memory usage?  With 6 windows of google.com open, plus this window I'm typing into now as a 7th Window, it's 90-91MB.  Can anyone compare?

As far as extensions not working in 3.0 Beta 5, there is an add-on called Nightly Tester Tools that allows you to make extensions that Firefox deems as incompatible, compatible. In order to do this you need to have all incompatible extensions installed before updating. It will allow the use of these extensions, but doesn't guarantee that they will function properly. I have never had any problems though. I haven't tried to see if this extension works in Beta 5 yet, but since it is intended to allow programmers to test new extensions I would suspect there is a working version.

my roommate installed beta 5 after having beta 4 for a week or so... it has resolved a lot of the crashing issues he was having (random freezes or not accessing some websites correctly)...

seems like a much more stable beta... can't wait for the full version to come out!

I read on some forums that this is supposed to be the most stable build yet!
