Facebook Reveals App Integration And "Timeline" Profile Layout

Facebook Reveals App Integration And "Timeline" Profile Layout

See anything different on your Facebook page? No, not from yesterday, silly. Today! Today, Facebook's F8 conference got underway in California, where creator Mark Zuckerberg took the stage to unveil quite a few new things that will definitely serve to push Facebook beyond that "just a social network" stage. The "Profile" as you know it will be transformed into a Timeline, which will reportedly help users "tell their story" in a more logical, seamless way.

This supposedly puts a focus on the most important things that you've posted, not just the newest. This makes sense now that Facebook is many years old, and folks that join today have no easy way to make heads or tails of your journey to today. With timeline, now you have a home for all the stories you've already shared. They don't just vanish as you add new stuff.

According to Facebook: "Timeline is wider than your old profile, and it's a lot more visual.  The first thing you'll notice is the giant photo right at the top. This is your cover, and it's completely up to you which of your photos you put here. As you scroll down past your cover, you'll see your posts, photos and life events as they happened in time. You choose what's featured on your timeline. You can star your favorites to double their size or hide things altogether."

There's also a great deal of music and app integration coming, with Slacker Radio being one of those apps, as well as Clear Channel Radio being on the Facebook integration bandwagon. You can start adding some of these new apps today, but Timeline won't be available for a few weeks. When you get your timeline, you can choose to publish it immediately or take a few days to review what's there and add anything that's missing.

Looking forward to the new Facebook? Already hate the new look? Just remember: last week's look was the same look most people hated six months ago, and now they're begging Facebook to revert. We suspect this one will grow on people as well.

Do I hate the new look? Do I have a choice? Nope. I miss the days of facebook when you needed a .edu email to join. So is this timeline going to go back to my college days when I joined?

I do NOT like the idea of this update either. I'm getting so fed up with these layout changes. Integrating their idea of a "better" timeline into our feeds is/was a terrible idea, and to do it with our profile page is just going to be the same. They are getting so much negative feedback about it but they do NOT care.

But, To tell ya the truth, I don't care what they do to my profile page. My feeds however, are another story. I can't seem to find anything I need to. They have it so messed up now. The last couple days I have spent trying to tweak my settings but it just doesn't seem to make it better. I'm only able to see what Facebook thinks is "important to me". And yes, I have changed the type of updates, updates from whom, creating lists etc. I have tried everything, and I'm still not getting ALL the updates that I would have before this change.

I'm hoping they will go back to the old layout, but I doubt that will happen. They've already moved on to the next unwanted change, as your article states. :(

don't know why everyone hating on the new update. i for one like the looks of it now. Some people have been closing their account because of this...

because the feeds do not show all updates now, you have to go to friend`s pages or business pages to see ALL their updates, also some updates go in the `ticker`feed which is too small and annoying to navigate through, especially when it auto scrolls for new updates. Sure it might `look good`but the functionality is terrible compared to the old layout.

I do have to say that I admire the Facebook userbase's resilience when it comes to interface changes. However, I don't think this is a good idea.

For one, I admire what he's trying to do but an entire history of someone's past. What? Does somebody even keep their pictures of when they were young? Also whatever Manduh said apples, how are you going to see the updates. I mean Facebook works well as a social network but their attempt to be more will just fall flat on their faces. I mean why else to people use facebook? to chat with their friends, share content and play games. Modify that aspect and the house of cards is likely to tumble down.

have not been diggin these changes at all .I want to see the update ALL of them of a page refresh instantly >>  do not need to mouse around., of have some feature decide what they or some think is relevant .Enough privacy and choice is already FB'd away .it's annoying to have to page to see the updated info & have more tabs open on FB  than before. >> bring the old interface and give us the functionality we expect.& deserve.  rant over >> so much for that | oh well :(

I like the idea of the update profile page but the new updates defeats the ease of keeping track for me. I really preferred being able to view all updates in chronological order. How bout providing us a toggle like they did with the last layout between top stories and chronological order...

I actually like the new design but agree the ticker is annoying. I like the idea of being able to subscribe only to certain types of updates by by walls full of game spam.

Yea a toggle would be nice.
And I have to say I'm not liking the new look at all, especially with the news feeds. For some reason, Facebook seems to think I want to see every single picture in a much larger size then they used to..I found this completely unnecessary. And at least previously, you used to be able to switch from most recent feed to top rated, but even that's gone now :(

I agree, a toggle option would be nice, instead of forcing us to use one or the other!

"Funny thing, as I was watching the *Introducing Timeline* video, The Karate Kid (2010) was playing on my TV at the same time, and the beginning of the movie matched the scheme of the the Timeline features ,that was ODD. "

"Right off the bat, I was hating Top Stories but after a day and a half, it has learned somewhat, whats most important, its not perfect, but its working better now. About Timeline, I think its great, specially for family members and real close friends.  Now, Im not the type of person that tags where Im at (once in a while), thats too much, but all the Other new Social apps are pretty cool. "

@ Manduh @Drake and everyone else, I feel your pain, @Omega your right. Though Its going to take time to get use to it, its not that bad ."

Manduh: the info at that link will only work if you have a mobile phone number in your Facebook account.

"Your account must be verified before you can take this action. Please verify your account by adding your mobile phone or credit card."

I don't have a cell phone and no way in hell I'm giving them my credit card number

That is strange!!  I don't have a mobile phone on my acct and never verified it with a mobile phone... I was able to do it.  :(

Anyway it looks like these new profiles will be going live Sept. 30th.  I really really like it!!!

I would have to agree with the older layout being better. I really hate when websites decide to change the layout just for the sake of doing something and making it look different. Most of the time the changes make the sites more difficult to navigate rather then provide any actual improvements. I hope facebook takes feedback to heart and at the very least provides options to choose between different layouts.
