After nine months of looking at Acer
's backside, Dell
has moved back up the ranks in the global PC market and has retaken the No. 2 spot, according to market research firm iSuppli
. Dell was able to capitalize on a "sales setback" that affected Acer during the second quarter of 2010, putting the OEM in the runner-up position behind market leader Hewlett-Packard
"With its product line heavily focused on mobile PCs, Acer's sequential decline in notebook shipments impacted its position at the total PC level more than its competitors, which were able to draw on the upswing in deskop shipments to bolster their total shipments," said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst, compute platforms research, for iSuppli.
During the second quarter, Dell managed to deliver 10.5 million PCs around the world, slightly less than the 10.7 million units the OEM moved in the first quarter. Dell's overall market share dropped from 13.1 percent to 12.8 percent, but was still able to leap ahead of Acer, which saw a 6.2 percent decline in second quarter shipments.
"The second quarter results show the market share battle between Dell and Acer is not over and that it will continue to rage," Wilkins added.
Meanwhile, Hewlett-Packard still leads the pack with a 18.1 percent share of the market, which was also down from the first quarter. Perhaps a temporary blip, every major PC maker -- HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo
, and Toshiba
-- showed a double-digit year-on-year growth, particularly Lenovo, which grew nearly 50 percent.
