Remember the triple-core Phenoms that AMD spoke about last year? Really, a way to use quad-cores that don't quite make the grade. This would be their first "public" appearance.

The XBOX360 has a 3 core cpu of some sort doesn't it? |
|
I am not quite sure, but all I know is that these 3-core AMD Phenoms suck, and they barealy or cannot beat the current Q6600. AMD/ATI has been going down for a while now, good thing that at least AMD/ATI's new video card the HD3870X2 can a least bring in some new buyers. |

I'm not sure I'd want to put a quad in my machine with one failed core disabeled, I know it's a commen practice like with Celeron and Sempron to sell crippled chips but unless it come in at a great price point with some of the Phenom problems worked out not going to happen for me. |

The market segment that these are aimed at aren't usually as inquistive as the byob crowd so they probably won't even come to find out that their cpu is a would be quad with a faulty core. These users are usually not concerned with having the best either as long as it works and is stable. |

Your right about that, they care about CPU, Ram, and Hd size, a lot don't know single, from dual or dual from Quad. I build and sell a lot, lately I've been polling about them knowing what a Dual core is. Most have heard of Core 2 Duo, few have heard of X2, and the one or two that have heard about Quad say "Oh that's the expensive one". Most say I just need it for Internet and the kids school work, and of late they ask for XP specifically, wanting to know if it's Vista compatable when Vista gets better. |

Indeed, I know there is a benchmark around somehwere regarding the 3 cores, but I'm not sure if it was just a core disabled phenom, or really their 3 core offering. I'll wait to see the upcoming benchmarks, but it seems like a bad situation for AMD. If you check out the thread on Tomshardware regarding AMD shipping phenoms with a faulty core, it could open up the path for faster clocks if it is indeed true. Will have to see how everything turns out, but I'm not holding my breath, AMD has lied to the public about the performance gains of Phenom, and we basically just got a prescott launch. I'll wait for the benchmarks, than state my opinion ^_^. |
