Comcast To Roll Out 50Mb/Sec Broadband

After reversing their stance on BitTorrent, Comcast has announced plans to offer their 50Mb/sec broadband in all existing markets by 2010. What would people use the extra bandwidth for? Digital distribution of movies and music seems a likely candidate and BitTorrent seems like it is going to be a key player in that arena.  So how fast is a 50Mb/sec connection in terms of downloading movies?  Fast enough:

“With the faster service, a customer could download a 4 gigabyte high-definition movie in about 10 minutes, compared with about an hour at previous speeds.”?

With this kind of bandwidth on tap, we can’t help but wonder if Comcast will start increasing the unofficial usage limits they currently impose on broadband customers.

I think they'd have to increase those limits, but you never know with Comcast. It's pretty nice to hear that we're finally catching up to the Japanese in broadband service, though I'm sure they'll be far ahead by the time this comes around.

Sweet.  If most of the peers on bittorrent get this, then yowza!  The pirate world would be sharing files like no other.  I don't like Comcast very much, but if this isn't expensive, then hey, go for it.

so it sounds like one would be able to reach a "bandwidth cap" in about a days time.....it sound exciting but wiith all the filtering/monitoring that Comcast is talking about I don't know if I would trust being able to use the connection for an entire month.

However....WOOT MINNESOTA!! (Its rollin out in the twin cities))

this is what is refered to as "wide band" and it is currently being tested out in 2 parts of the country... yeah as ice above me said the twin cities! (dunno their names though :-( )

this is an attempt by comcast to stay competitive with fios. it's just 1 small step towards a large change that needs to take place.

Minneapolis and St. Paul

I forgot about Verizons FIOS when I read about this article -- I am going to agree that this is probably the reason for the package release; I don't think many people will bite at this point though. $126 a month is a titch spendy for this guy Huh?

50MB/s is most definitely a huge increase in speed, but as ice already stated I question how well people will really be able to take advantage of it. This much speed is unnecessary for normal internet browsing, 10MB/s is more than adequate. The people who would want this added speed in the first place are those who download a lot of movies or torrent files. In other words people who use a lot of bandwidth. In my opinion Comcast's new stance on torrent traffic and "high" usage is even worse than before. This just sounds like an opportunity to pay more money for a slight increase to your predetermined throttle limit. With as much as I download, if they have a 10-20GB usage limit before your speed gets throttled back, I would get the brakes put on me within a few days.

Why dont these idiots stop screwing around with upgrading the cities to more speed and maybe spread the love and get us folks out in the country something better than dialsuck.
