Cheaper, Plastic iPhone to Debut This Summer Alongside iPhone 5S, Says Analyst

We’ve heard rumors already that Apple will debut a less expensive iPhone this summer, but today another analyst chimed in with another spin of the rumor mill and further details. According to Topeka Capital Brian White (via SFGate), who has been chatting up supply chain sources on a visit to China, the cheaper iPhone is indeed coming.

"At the China trade show, we had the opportunity to interact with various suppliers and vendors, including those working with Apple," he said in a note to investors. "Our general takeaway around Apple is that a lower-priced iPhone and the iPhone 5S will be announced together in June and launched in July."

The upcoming iPhon5S may look like this; a plastic iPhone will not

According to SFGate, he also said that the new iPhone would have a curved colored plastic back, but it would have the same long 4-inch screen size as the iPhone 5. It doesn’t sound like a terribly impressive device, but consumers would likely buy a plastic iPhone is the price was right. So how much might a cheaper, plastic iPhone cost? White anticipates a price tag of about $400.

This is all still just hearsay, but what say you: Would you drop $400 on a plastic iPhone, or has Apple lost its collective mind?

Sounds to me like another ipad mini. Will be highly touted as being the best but in the end cheaper phones will have better features for alot less cost.

Apple always has charged a premium for doing business with them, not always justly, in fact in recent years their products have been lagging significantly and over priced even more.

I got the Itouch 5 for my birthday in september, and then sold it and quickly bought the nexus 4 that had way better specs for the EXACT same price. I want really badly for apple to be the best again, mainly because their innovations in the past have been game changing.

I would pay a premium more than a product was worth if it was the best product. Apple can't claim to be better than Samsung and they may retreat into the 10% vs 90% market share that their Computers have been in for so long.

I think that the other guys are just catching up to Apple. The fact that their competition sells better specs for less is having an effect too.

I think a cheaper plastic iPhone will sell, just because of the Apple name. The ignorant masses will see it as a cheaper version of the ever popular iPhone and not realize it's going to contain lesser and or inferior components.

I have a Motorola phone that I bought in 2006 and it still works great. It may not have all of the latest technology, but it's still functional.

It's Plastic.

I guess that my point is that Plastic isn't the indicator of interior quality in a device. I will be looking at the reviews when they come out, but my son visited me a while back and I got to play with his Android phone for four days. I was impressed with it and liked it.

I've messed around with my daughter's iPhone too and it worked great. I liked the Android phone better because of the (more open) software that you can get for it.

iPhones being locked down is not a selling point as I see it.

I wouldn't say anything made of plastic can not be quality but on the other hand with the whole ipad mini it makes you wonder. If the ipads sell so well why would you make an inferior product just because it is smaller.

While Apple is used to having quality products its seems when they venture away from the things they do really well to get a lower price point or whatever its just not what is expected. The days of people paying a premium for Apple are just about over and they still got the idea anything they put out is gold regardless.

It's the market. (cheaper sells, as Android has shown them) Apple has a lot of people who believe that their products are the bomb. So they have a market already. They just want more money as they're supposed to. Also, we don't know at this point if it will be a POS or not.

I've owned an iMac Mini (pre-Intel) and an iMac 24" (Intel Extreme CPU) and both of them were great functioning PCs. I never had any problems with either of them. There was a learning curve, but I didn't have any problems figuring it all out. I ended up gifting both of them to family members that needed them more than I did.

They'll sell a lot of the cheaper product, because cheaper speaks to people in a real way in our lousy economy. Of course I hope that the quality is there, but I received an iPad as a gift from my eldest daughter and the quality issues with their new gear doesn't matter to me. I'm happy with the one I have and will not be replacing it.

As long as it works for you that is fine and all. I just look at it and i do think Apple since the iPod and first iPhone has been the shining star of quality products so they can ask high prices and most people think its good value which I think alot of that was Steve Jobs constantly on this sort of thing which the new regime at Apple has gotten slightly lax on. One of my best friends owns both a mac book pro 2009 i believe and hes used Windows and PCs all his life. He loves the aluminum body of his mac pro and refuses to ever own another laptop till that one dies.

I get people will buy it because its cheaper and an "iPhone" I just think once it get released it will be of inferior quality. Apple knows how to have well manufactured products, not cheap well manufactured products in my opinion. All of this is speculation and opinion. If it comes out and is built to the same standards are the other iPhone then I will more than happy to say I was wrong.

I ~may~ be right, but you might be right too. LOL!   Smile   At this point we don't know.

But I think you hit it on the head about the absence of Jobs. They're still trying to find themselves after his passing.

I guess it really is over Steve Jobs dead body...
