Boxee Box, Software To Support VUDU Streaming Movie Rentals

VUDU. Does that name ring a bell? If you have been paying attention to the media streaming world the past few years, it might. The company began by offering a set-top box solution, much like Roku has recently. The box was only for movie rentals and purchases, though, so no other outside streaming from places like Hulu. Since it was so limited in scope, few people actually went out of their way to get a box.

Early on, VUDU realized that licensing their software out made more sense. This would enable existing set-top boxes to actually add functionality, and even select connected televisions. This week, VUDU announced that their movie rental service would also be joining Boxee for Windows, Mac and even on the Boxee Box. If you've been considering a Boxee Box, now there's all the more reason to buy one.

VUDU's movie rental service supports full 1080p HD video streams, and it promises newer releases (like Iron Man 2, Get Him To The Greek, and Prince of Persia) available to rent as soon as they hit the market and thousands of titles available for just $2 for 2 night rentals. Also, anyone who signs up for VUDU through Boxee will get a free movie rental. VUDU will be available as a Boxee App on Windows and Mac computers, as well as the Boxee Box by D-Link this November.

Vudu’s HD On-Demand Movie Service Arrives on Boxee

VUDU’s awesome on-demand movie service will soon be available to Boxee users in the US on Mac, Windows, and Boxee Box platforms.

Boxee is honored to be VUDU’s very first Mac & Windows delivery platform, allowing users both new and old to access VUDU’s huge library of content from any computer.  In turn, VUDU will be Boxee’s first premium pay-per-view movie service with access to new release movies as soon as they come out on DVD along with a huge catalogue of TV shows and critically acclaimed films.

With the industry’s largest HD content library and the ability to stream content in full 1080p HD, VUDU has quickly separated itself from the competition as a must-have service for any cinephile.  VUDU makes it easy to find a movie for any taste by bringing in a huge catalogue of options for indies as well as Hollywood hits, new releases (like Iron Man 2, Get Him To The Greek, and Prince of Persia) available to rent as soon as they hit the market and thousands of titles available for just $2 for 2 night rentals.  In conjunction with our existing movie library and Netflix App, we’re excited that Boxee will soon have options for every budget and access to almost any mainstream movie.

With the new VUDU App, Boxee users will get full access to a massive library of movies and TV shows. The App gives you access to all major genres, curated movie collections and the ability to pivot off of directors/actors/producers (helpful when your friend swears the guy who ate next to you at Fred 62 was from Silence of the Lambs, and you say he’s from the Wire, and you realize, you’re both right).

VUDU  has been kind enough to offer every new user who signs up through Boxee a free movie so you can try out the service when it launches.

Boxee’s free software will give viewers access to VUDU’s immense movie collection in standard definition. Users who have the Boxee Box by D-Link will experience the mind-blowing quality of VUDU’s full HD and HDX library delivered directly onto their televisions in 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.

We’ve been big fans of VUDU for a long time.  We’ve seen them grow from a small startup just like us, to a new powerhouse within the entertainment industry after their purchase by Wal-Mart and release on most major TVs and Blu-Ray players.  Through our partnership, anyone can now try VUDU on their computer via Boxee; something we hope that will enable a whole new audience of people to experience their service.  Meanwhile we are looking forward to a long-lasting partnership with them across all Boxee-enabled devices.
