Apple Tries to Sneak Safari Onto Windows Systems

Apple Tries to Sneak Safari Onto Windows Systems

Can't get market share the good old-fashioned way?  How about sneaking your browser onto systems, then?

With the release of Safari 3.1 on Tuesday, Apple started giving Windows users the option of downloading Safari via the Apple Software Update pop-up.

"Safari for Windows is the fastest and easiest-to-use web browser for the PC. It displays web pages faster than any other browser and is filled with innovative features -- all delivered in an efficient and elegant user interface," states Apple's message in the pop-up screen.

Tsk, tsk.  The browser that's really starting to take market share from Internet Explorer is Firefox, which, according to Net Applications, now has 17.3% vs. 74.9% for IE and 5.7% for Safari.

just noticed that today it does indeed try installing safari

Bad move on Apple's part. Very dissappointed in them. They have a good reputation for not pushing these kind of agendas.

EDIT:At least the Mozilla CEO agrees with me.

Mozilla CEO:

Apple has made it incredibly easy--the default, even--for users to install ride along software that they didn't ask for, and maybe didn't want. This is wrong, and borders on malware distribution practices.

It's wrong because it undermines the trust that we're all trying to build with users. Because it means that an update isn't just an update, but is maybe something more. Because it ultimately undermines the safety of users on the Web by eroding that relationship. It's a bad practice and should stop.

couldnt it be a security threat too i mean now that they can can patch or add stuff you dont have what would it take for somebody to hack it now

I don't think this changes any security issues, it's just bad practice. You can still decline the download.

true just wonderedwhy they would do something like this

The reason they would want to do this should be obvious. Though it is a bit sneaky and an aggressive way to go about it, it is also a great way for them to convert people over to Safari. I am not surprised to see them do this at all. On the rare occasions that I use QuickTime, it always tries to have you update to a version that has iTunes. Apple loves to bundle unrelated things together in an attempt to expand their market share. This is only a natural progression of those tactics. Personally I don't care for IE that much and have been using Firefox for quite a few years. With all the extensions and add-ons IE and Safari have nothing on Firefox.

I read this and laughed because my g/f was updating her iTunes last night and she is one of those people that doesn't pay close attention when shes installing a program (it will ask if you want to install 10 toolbars) and she'll just click next, not caring.....

Anyway, she inadvertantly installed safari and got scared -- "What IS this??" she asked me like she had just downloaded a virus or something.

hahaha...It should be classified as one in my books =P...

They've been doing this as well with Quicktime and Itunes..Talk about scandalous. NO, I don't want your shitty itunes, just give me quicktime so I can visit apple trailers =P. Back a while ago, they were a 100% packaged deal if anyone remembers...But I guess a lot of people complained and they offered it as an option. SCREW APPLE...The company, not the frut which is ohhh so delicious =D.

why do they need both quicktime and itunes seems like they would have one to do the job of both like windows media player

 Apple posted a new commercial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sd1b8vLz9LA

This time bashing Vista on soem poor reviews it gor months ago. Any touting that Leopard got a perfect 10 review from some non-computer site.

If you look at the page they are on, it is an article on this very topic of Apple pushing through Safari. \

You know what, I think the Apple products are neat, but just for all of these stupid commercials that are released that do nothing but bash Windows using half-truths and misconceptions I am not going to buy an Apple product. You know, I haven't seen an Apple commercial about Apple products in years! Heck, Apple could be simply an apple orchard given what they play in the commercials. Come on Apple, maybe one screenshot of Leopard? or how about why you should buy a Mac?

i have a feeling that not many hothardware forum members like safari

I don't mind it, but with Itunes I had tons of folders and files just created and throw here and there, so I really don't trust Apple. Their philosiphy is to do it for you and behind the scenes, and thats something I don't trust, especially when it comes to them shoving a browser down my throat.

Plus I remember the first Mac virus (or at least one of the first) released a few years ago, turns out Safari (or it might have been quicktime) always opened a file after you downloaded it, no questions asked.

I used Safari a little a year or two ago, and just could not stand it, so I used IE on that Mac! Currently I use Firefox, and IE (for flash stuff) and am all set for browsers thank you very much, if I want a new one I will look into Opera.

firefox is all i use but i defently wont use safari now for sure with them trying to cram it into are systems wonder if theyll try it on the next update

In my opinion, the only software that is made by Apple for Windows OSes is Quicktime Pro/Player.The rest are just bloatware, and Safari isn't even open-source

Why not just use a "universal" media player for your quicktime trailers? I know you are a media buff....so what are your thoughts on VLC? (its what I use for all odd file types when I don't desire having extension-specific players all over my PC)

Also if you know of a way to DL just iTUnes w/o quicktime you should let me know (I mean aside from just un-installing Q.T. after the install is complete)

Safari -- meh; unnecessary in all respects as it does less than firefox and in some cases less than IE (*GASP!!*) so why bother?  Security isn't as much of an issue with Macs so maybe they aren't used to programming as such - when they address this a bit more and add some extensions maybe I will play a little more with it

I don't think its possible to install iTunes without quicktime as apple claims you need quicktime to be able to see certain content. I actually think iTunes is the spawn of SATAN  and will do everything in my power to keep it off all the personal computers in my possession including a G4 system I have which is running OS X Tiger. install quicktime, go out of your way to get the QT version without iTunes and it tries to force iTunes and now Safari on you that really sucks.

I stopped updating my iTunes a few months ago.  I just didn't see the point.  So I totally missed this controversy, even though I use iTunes almost everyday.  Likewise I don't update WinAMP anymore.  Just no point if it does everything fine already.  Unless I hear second hand of some good new feature, I'll hesitate to upgrade.

really the itunes updates are for new products like the 32 gb ipod touch  needed a update to run when it first came out

I actually don't use Quicktime...=P...I use FFDshow, hallimedia splitter, and Matroska. Basically, I can decode any format via any player I want. So I just use MPC, my player of choice =P. But back in the day, I did have to download quicktime for friends when I wanted them to check out a trailer. Apple trailers has some fantastic quality HD trailers, that's for sure. But I didn't want to install my package preference on a friends rig and throw their system out of whack when it comes to what they're use too =P. But yea, Quicktime Alternative + Real Alternative and your set as well....All the formats I play are decoded in MPC via FFDShow =D...I love it =P. What's also nice, is that ffdshow let's you tweak video as well, post processing, bright/contrast adjustments even to a single RGB value, noise reduction, debands, blur, sharpening, deinterlacing, crop, resize, etc...Everything all in real time if your processor is capable enough =P..which mine truly are now ::bows to hothardware:: =D.

If you guys have any questions regarding media and other issues, just drop me a pm or response =P. Whether it be meda issues, HD Decoding, media encoding, etc....

BTW..Regarding Itunes..ATM I believe they have it separately, just checked, and it doesn't state it including it into the downloader. What I was stating before way a while back, you were forced to download both and install both. Talk about scandalous, but I guess a lot of people complained consideirng you can download them individually.

Didnt the Ceo of paypal warn people recently about using safari to log into their site ? saying it was severely unsecure ? I thought i read something like that.

safari supposdly only good on apple

Comrade Jobs should realize most Mac people will allow you install stuff and do lots of things quietly and behind the scenes, but folks on other OS's don't like it so much. Plus there is a massive difference between having updates checked by default, but an install of a program as well?

Very underhanded of Apple. I guess this is supposedly their response to MS installing silverlight (kind of like Flash) with Office 08 (regular install, not an update), but it is too far.

Funny people claimed that MS was the evil one, and that Apple was the pretty and good one...

I most certainly won' trust any of that Apple crap, way too much extra files and folders it throws randomly around. I made sure to disable all Apple services (other than Itunes).
