Apple Slates Oct. 4 Event for Campus, as Moscone is Booked

Reports point to an October 4 event to unveil the next-generation iPhone, although it's still not confirmed by Apple itself. One problem with the rumor has already been pointed out: Moscone Center, where Apple usually holds these things, is booked by Oracle that day. What to do, what to do?

AllThingsD, which earlier broke the Oct. 4 date, says it appears Apple will hold the event on its Cupertino campus, in its Town Hall Auditorium. Although it will be years before its new spaceship-style HQ is built, one which has a facility worthy of these types of events, Apple has held these types of events on-campus before.

Town Hall Auditorium has been used on several occasions. Last October, Apple held its “Back to the Mac” media event at Town Hall, at which it previewed the Mac OS X Lion, which was released earlier this year, along with iLife ’11; the company also announced updated MacBook Air models.

However, obviously Town Hall Auditorium won't allow Apple to invite the same number of people it could to Moscone Center. There could be several reason behind this, not just Oracle's already existing reservation of Moscone Center.

It's possible the date has been moving so much that Apple simple did not have enough lead time to reserve a similar location, such as perhaps the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA).

It's also possible that a more intimate setting was wanted to ease Tim Cook into the role of host for the event. In the past, when Steve Jobs took medical leave, while Cook led the company's day-to-day operations, Phil Schiller, senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing did the presentations at events. This time, with Cook newly minted as the company's CEO, it might be viewed as sending the wrong message if Cook did not appear to host the event.

Whatever the reason, the sheer volume of rumors indicates the next-gen iPhone is nearly here. What still isn't clear is if it will be a minimally change iPhone 4S, an iPhone 5, or both. Most do expect that the new iPhone will appear on Sprint as well as prior carriers Verizon and AT&T.

Apple is expected to introduce several other products at the event, so the world awaits with bated breath.
