Apple Patent Award Slashed By Almost Half

"Not so fast, buster." Those words probably weren't uttered in public during the Samsung v. Apple trials, but that's the feeling we're getting given the latest announcement in the saga. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh just cut down Apple's massive $1.05 billion victory against Samsung. In the patent case, she whacked around 45% of the penalty, reducing the jury's damages award by an astonishing $450.5 million. Why? According to Koh, the jury "based its award for 14 Samsung products on an incorrect legal theory."

That's incredibly great news for Samsung, and slightly damaging news for Apple. In order for Samsung to get the damages reduced again, however, an all new trial / appeal is likely to be required. Needless to say, these two aren't about to give up the fight just yet, but one thing's for sure: Samsung's potential debt just got a lot less.
