Perhaps you’ve heard this before
, but Amazon
is rumored to be launching its own set top box in a bid to gobble up more TV content and streaming
market share. The purported Amazon box would be designed to compete with the likes of Roku
and Apple TV
by allowing users to stream content with a unit that’s not tied to a cable or satellite pay-TV provider.
Of course, Amazon’s box would surely be tied in some way to its own Amazon Prime Instant Video service. Amazon Prime has a growing catalog of titles, and it’s heavily investing in a new crop of original programming
The device will allegedly run (some version of) Android
, and so it follows that the box would possibly run apps as well as streaming video. Casual gaming could be on the table, as well, especially as Amazon recently snapped up game developer Double Helix
Re/code reports that whatever sort of set top box Amazon has in the works, it could be available as early as next month. This should be interesting.
