Amazon Cloud Outage Takes Out Netflix, Pinterest, and Instagram

Amid a wicked thunderstorm with high winds and wide scale power outages on the mid-atlantic coast, an Amazon facility in Virginia that supports its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) server went down late last night, temporarily taking out any number of website--including Netflix, Pinterest, and Instagram.

By now, Netflix and Pinterest are back up, so movie watchers and recipe hunters can breathe a sigh of relief, but at this time Instagram is still down, so the flow of grainy photos of people’s sandaled feet will remain temporarily staunched.

According to Amazon’s AWS status page, they’re still working on restoring aspects of the service. The most recent update at 7:14am PDT says, “We are continuing to make progress towards recovery of the remaining EC2 instances, EBS volumes and ELBs.”

Update: Amid the casualties, it appears that RIM's BlackBerry Messenger service is out, too.

Im actually happy that instagram is down, it gives me a reason not to check it.

This is why I'm still a bit weary of everything moving to the cloud. I can always pop one of my blurays into my ps3 and watch a movie, but I have a few albums on amazon cloud and they're beyond reach if it ever goes down.
