Amazon Brings Prime Instant Video To Android-Based Smartphones Via Updated App
Amazon on Tuesday announced that Prime members in the U.S., U.K., and Germany can now tap into Prime Instant Video content on their Android smartphones, a new feature of the updated Amazon App for Android. Once you update the app (or install the latest version for the first time), you'll have the option of installing the Prime Instant Video player app, which is only available in the Amazon Appstore.
It's a bit of a stubborn end-run on Amazon's part, though it falls right in line with the company's plan to keep customers within its own content consumption ecosystem. Once you have the player installed, you'll have access to unlimited streaming of tens of thousands of movies and TV episodes from Prime Instant Video, including popular titles like The Sopranos, True Blood, 24, and others.
Streaming Prime Instant Video content to your Android phone doesn't cost anything extra, at least not on Amazon's part -- you'll have to keep track of your own data caps, if applicable. This is just yet another benefit thrown onto a very large pile for Prime members.
