Even though ATI's release of a graphics card that supports DisplayPort was delayed due to their merger with AMD, they still managed to beat Nvidia to market with one. It shouldn't be long now before we see a consumer level gaming graphics card from them with DisplayPort. I believe Dell is currently the only one with monitors available that feature DisplayPort. I bet they are going to be seeing an increase in orders for their 3008WFP and 2408WFP monitors now. |

I am no display buff at all but DisplayPort sounds like an exciting interface -- I don't however understand how the standard is a direct competitor with HDMI as to me it seems like a comparison between apples and oranges. The main difference being that DisplayPort doesn't support digital audio over its channel(s).... |
Actually DisplayPort does in fact support audio on any and all of its 4 channels. Some of the main advantages of DisplayPort are: 1.) Increased Bandwidth 2.) Based on micro-packet protocol -Allows multiple video streams over single physical connection (in a future version) 3.) Designed to support internal chip-to-chip communication -Can drive display panels directly, eliminating control circuits and allowing for cheaper and slimmer displays 4.) Supports both RGB and YCbCr color spaces 5.) Auxiliary channel can be used for touch-panel data, USB links, camera, microphone, etc. 6.) Allows backward compatibility with single link DVI/HDMI; dual link DVI/HDMI and analog VGA require active converter adapters or dongles 7.) Fewer lanes with embedded clock reduce RFI |

i kinda hope displayport picks up |
Thanks Ajay....as I said I am no display buff but it seems you know your stuff! Someone should just give you a C2D or something.... Anyway if you put it like that DisplayPort sounds like it would pwn HDMI across the board then; is there a huge price difference (in manufactoring PCBs namely) coming with all these new capabilities? (Again in comparision to HDMI) |

Wikipedia can help you, if you can understand the tech stuff. I still have a VGA CRT monitor and use a VGA-DVI adapter, so personally I don't even need HDMI yet. Display Port is just showing how far behind I am in display technologies. |

Does displayport bring with it all the DRM crap that HDMI is supposed to have? |

DisplayPort has the option for DPCP (DisplayPort Content Protection), which is copy protection licensed by AMD. |
