Gamespy's multiplayer servers are getting unplugged and going dark on May 31, and as the deadline approaches, game publishers are scrambling to find new homes. For 2K
, the solution is simple -- send its more popular games over to Steamworks. That includes the first Borderlands
titles and several Civilization games, which are all headed to Steam.
"Beginning May 31, 2014, Borderlands 1 and select titles from the Civilization catalog will temporarily go offline while service is transitioned to Steamworks," 2K announced in a blog post. "During the transition, players will experience interruption of several features, including online play, matchmaking and voiceover Internet protocol (VOIP) where applicable. Players will not experience interruptions to offline play."
The full list of games making the movie include Borderlands, Civilization III, Civilization III: Conquests, Civilization III: Play the World, Civilization IV, Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, Civilization IV: Colonization, and Civilization IV: Warlords.
Not all of 2K's games are getting a stay of execution. Several titles will lose their online multiplayer component when Gamespy's servers shut down, including Close Combat First to Fight, Jetfighter, Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector, Leadfoot, Rune, Stronghold 2, Stronghold Legends, Top Spin, Top Spin 2, Vietcong, Vietcong Demo, Vietcong First Alpha, Vietcong 2, Vietcong 2 Demo, MLB Fantasy All-Stars, Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution, Major Leage Baseball 2K9 Fantasy All-Stars, NHL 2K10, and NBA 2K10. A handful of those titles are Wii or DS games.
