The advent of the DVR was a life-changing innovation--it sounds shallow to say, but admit it, it’s true--and now DIRECTV believes it’s taken the technology to new level with its DIRECTV Genie.
The DVR lets you record up to 5 shows simultaneously, and playback is nearly as powerful; a single Genie DVR serves up to three additional TVs in the house, although it sounds like each device will need a client. The single DVR enables the household to watch up to 4 live TV channels or recordings simultaneously, with full DVR functionality such as pause and rewind.
If you like getting recommendations for new shows, the Genie is happy to oblige. Based on your viewing habits, the software will recommend shows it thinks you might like and offer to record the entire series for you.
Recording an entire series is no longer an exercise in storage-hogging though, as the Genie DVR boasts 1TB of storage, or enough room for 200 hours of HD or 800 hours of SD programming.
Other perks include the ability to search and schedule recordings up to two weeks in advance, watch programs from the beginning of an episode if you happen to tune in late, and get previous episodes from as far back as 5 weeks.
Currently, only new DIRECTV customers can get the Genie DVR, but it’s coming to all who are willing to pay for it by the end of the year.
