AT&T Terms of Service: “Don’t Diss Us or Else”

It's bad enough Comcast has their secret limited unlimited service, whereby they will cut you off if you (in their opinion) hog too much bandwidth (although they won't tell anyone what that limit is).  Now AT&T won't let you be critical of them.

Have you taken a look at AT&T’s Terms of Service for High-Speed Internet (HSI) lately? Some changes they’ve made are downright draconian. In the section labeled “5.1 Suspension/Termination,” AT&T says the normal stuff about lack of payment and so forth. But clause (c) says they can terminate your service for conduct that AT&T believes: tends to damage the name or reputation of AT&T, or its parents, affiliates and subsidiaries.

That means (technically) you can't blog about them, email about, them, etc. etc. in a negative manner.  Sheesh!  What do you readers think about this?

a company called surewest that does cable in california has the same request, i think it's simply, don't engage in illegal activity on our network as it could come back to us and make us look like a safeharbor for pirates, hackers etc.

i honestly don't think it has to do with slander, whether written or spoken

Well, in this case, though I'm sure this isn't going to be a popular opinion, these are AT&T's terms of service and you don't have to like them. In other words, you agree to them when you sign up, or you do not and don't sign up for their service. If you do agree to them, then they can kick your butt to the curb if they so choose, based on violation of TOS.

I'm not saying folks should like it. In fact, vote with your wallet and don't use AT&T, if you can help it, if you don't like this terms of service that specifically limits your freedom of speech. Other than that, you either agree or disagree with the terms and that's that. End of story...
