Asus Striker II Formula nForce 780i Motherboard

0 thumbs up

3DMark06's built-in CPU test is a multi-threaded DirectX gaming metric that's useful for comparing relative performance between similarly equipped systems.  This test consists of two different 3D scenes that are processed with a software renderer that is dependent on the host CPU's performance.  Calculations that are normally reserved for your 3D accelerator are instead sent to the CPU for processing and rendering.  The frame-rate generated in each test is used to determine the final score.

CPU performance based on 3DMark's results also placed the three boards in a very close knit group, with the Blitz Formula once again in the lead.  On the bright side, the Striker II Formula has moved up into second place, 13 points behind.  We're still looking at a margin of difference less than a single percent, however.

 LAME MT MP3 Encoding Test

Converting a Large WAV To MP3

LAME MT is an open-source mid to high bit-rate and VBR (variable bit rate) MP3 audio encoder that is used widely around the world in a multitude of third party applications. In this test, we created our own 223MB WAV file and converted it to the MP3 format using this multi-thread capable application in single and multi-thread modes. Processing times are recorded below, listed in seconds. Here, shorter times equate to better performance.

Our custom LAME MT benchmark resulted in identical times for each of the boards except the multi-threaded run on the Striker II Formula (which was one second slower).  As with much of the CPU-based testing, the results show little difference between NVIDIA and Intel boards using similar components.

WAAAAAY to much $$ for a motherboard....not to mention its pretty much the same board as the Striker I with 3-way SLI support is all. Another con is the passive heatsinks which is fine for a silent-based PC but we all know OCing and silent don't really go hand-in-hand. Actually this is probably a lot of the reason the OCing results weren't as expected -- its tough with the passive chipset cooling.

Good read though :) Nice analysis of its features, now if they would hit the ~$100 mark I would actually think about it

Nice motherboard. Right now I have a Striker Extreme 680i and its doing great for me so far(over 6 months use). Don't really need to upgrade to this yet. Maybe later when the new Intel cpus come out. ^_^

If you think that's a lot of money, wait till you see the 790I's...such a bs board for 300-350?...Nvidia is just laughing and pointing at the consumers while they run off to the bank. >_<....::shakes fist at nvidia:: Damn Greedy Buggers!

I have to agree with Kamrooz on this , the 790I is not worth 300-350 dollars for what you get and your still looking at having to buy the overpriced DDR3 with crappy timings. What's even worse is the 780I which is nothing but a beefed up 680I . Nvidia sure got one over on the consumers there with  this so called new chip set.But hey if thats what keeps some people happy then fine , but I think as consumers we should be able to expect more and better quality from these products we buy.
