Samsung Portable SSD T3 Offers Up To 2TB Of Fast Storage In Your Pocket
Traditionally the go-to form factor for portable storage has been the USB flash drive. Samsung may change that way of thinking. Following up on the release of its blazing fast Portable SSD T1, Samsung today announced the Portable SSD T3, essentially an upgraded version of its predecessor with copious storage options to choose from.
The Portable SSD T3 (just T3 from here on out) retains the same pocket-friendly form factor of its predecessor, only now it offers multiple gigabyte and terabyte options. Whereas the original topped out at 1TB, the new T3 doubles top-end storage capacity to 2TB, giving you plenty of space to store high-resolution photographs, 4K videos, and other big size files. The T3 also comes in 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB capacities.
Samsung uses its own proprietary Vertical NAND (V-NAND) memory inside the T3. Combined with SSD TurboWrite technology, the T3 is a rated to deliver read and write speeds of up to 450MB/s through its USB 3.1 interface. That's four times faster than your typical external hard disk drive (HDD) solution.
We haven't tested the T3 yet, but when we reviewed the T1, which is also rated to transfer data at up 450MB/s, its real-world performance crushed that of a pair of fast USB flash drives that we pitted it against. It also came close to and even exceeded its rated speed in a couple of benchmarks (SiSoft SANDRA and ATTO, respectively).
The T3 sports a USB 3.1 Type-C connection. This makes it compatible with a wide and growing range of USB devices, including the latest Android phones and tablets (and of course PCs). It uses the exFAT file system and is equipped with AES 256-bit hardware encryption.
Samsung didn't mention anything about price but did say the Portable SSD T3 will be available next month.
